OT - bid sniping on eBay

I got sniped once

Then after I lost the auction, I did a search to find out what just happened. That is when I discovered I had been "sniped".

Ebay will honor up to your MAX bid. The possible advantage to using another program is that you might get the item for less than your max, unless someone else wants it worse than you ($$$ ).

If I really wanted something really bad I would be strongly tempted to utilize a snipe site. I also might just enter in my max bid in ebay and leave it at that. If I win, fine. If I lose, so what! :(

Your "bid early bid high" strategy only helps ebay (fees)... People (I have) will "fish" for your max bid... cranking up the base price.

Sniping has saved me a bundle...

Another vote for Auctionsniper. It is so cheap to use it and it frees up my time so I can look at what's new on this chainsaw forum. http://www.arboristsite.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
:)

Also, you can snipe in groups. i.e. if you see 5 of the same item for sale, you set up a bid so that if you miss on the first item, it will try the next one, one after the other through the group, until you either win one or lose on all of them. That can save a huge amount of time.

oh so thats whats been happening

whats really funny is that after a while you start to figure out whos who. theres a group of guys with similar taste in saws as me and i always see them bidding on stuff i'm watching. whats even more funny is then seeing them ask about the saw and some sort of issue they have.. say between here and chainsawcollectors.se . if you know my ebay handle throw me a bone.. i'm just trying to get "a" working saw to go slabbin with.. and then i'll be able to sell off the collectible stuff i've been acquiring.

like charlie brown's small parts partner stash i got the other day

i don't mind you guys bidding stuff up.. especially newbies.. you keep the trade value high.

gunnar the sniper stuff I use lets me "shadow" (follow)other ebay users, I can check and see what they have been bidding on, I let these guys your talking about find the deals I might like too! then BANG its mine

I've used eSnipe with many satisfying results. I have zero feelings of guilt over using it(have not ebayed any saws so you guys are safe :D ). Click and forget,,,,, then wait for the confirming email.:rockn: No sitting around waiting till the last minute....:bang: :bang:

When more than multiple bidders are using multiple sniper services it technically is not always the "highest" bid that wins, playing with the buffer and how well the service performs the snipe has as much to do with it as anything.....

Good luck Finn, did ya get it???

If the item is at $50 and you've bid $100 and no one bids against you when it ends you'll get it for $50. If someone is bidding against you they will have to beat your bid of $100. If they were to bid $90 on it the price would go up to $90 for you even if they did'nt outbid your $100

Correct - except if they bid $90 and you have $100 in proxy, you will pay the next minimum incremental bid above $90 so that you outbid them - until you reach your proxy max.

IMO, chain saws are one category I plan to stay away from on E-pay. There are just too many people interested in the same things, and it not at all possible to get any kind of a deal that way. Shyster operators soon learn that there is easy money to be made, and there isn't really a good way to verify that you're getting (or not!) what is being advertized.

I have to say that I probably have as many collector saws as I'll ever need, and unless I can get more at the prices I used to see them at, I'm not particularly interested. As far as saws for me to actually use, I'll stop by the dealer.

Ebay thrives by appealing to our desires to play some variations of the game of screw your neighbors. I was never very good at that game, so I don't play...

Eyolf, you got that right. I look for saws for parts on occasion and am amazed at what people will pay when they (and often the seller) know nothing about the saw.

sometimes its over two days into it

yeah for collecting i've done much better at little local shops or the dump even. have yet to pay more than $45 for a saw. wondering if i'm going to have to suck it up and go to the dealer and drop 800-1600 for the strength of saw i need for some road side slabbin. hon hon says that after we pay off the puter and that excercise thing she got then the next credit move is either at a saw shop or something pro audio.

the ones that get me are the numb nuts that bid the saw up a couple hundred 2 days into the auction. they typically go for 7 days people.

Bidnapper didn't work for me so I didn't get the item. Maybe I did something wrong - first time and all. With the help of someone else here (Thanks Trigger) I did end up buying what I wanted. The seller put up another listing of the same item as soon as the first auction ended and I used the Buy-It-Now option.
