After the wrong fuel (unleaded with no 2-stroke added) was put into my Stihl MS260 it seized (arrrrggg!).

I don't know what the hell I'm doing, but I'll have a go, so I've fiddled about with it, taking bits apart etc. Somehow it's become 'un-siezed', because I can now pull the starter cord, whereas before it was jammed.

When the exhaust is taken of you can see some scoring on the piston, which I expected seeing as this is the hottest part.

Anyhow, my problem now is that it won't start. Why is this? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Probably a stuck ring. does it feel like it has enough compression? take a look at the basics before assuming the issue is more complicated.
BTW, Welcome to the site. geez, have I welcomed enough people today? at first I thought you were Aussie Lopa.

That's the weird thing. It feels pretty much like it always did. When you say 'stuck ring', do you mean the piston ring jammed? But has now freed. If so why would that prevent it from starting now tho?

A stuck ring is where the metal on the piston melted, and keeps the ring so close to the piston that it cant creat any compression on the top end. typically something you have to tear down to fix.

Maybe the rings feel OK but drag from the damage could be replacing compression, maybe thats why i won't start.

That was an expensive experiance but life's full of thing like that.

Expensive! Oh yes. Yes indeed!
The robbing thieves at the Stihl shop want $750 (Australian)to fix the thing.

Buy the parts on Ebay, and fix it yourself, you'll save a bundle, and learn a lot in the process. Note. if not mechanically inclined do not attempt this repair.

Good advice.Already it done this morning. Got the parts (piston etc) coming from one of your lot. Thank God for ebay. I'm still a bit perplexed as to why it won't start since I un-siezed the thing tho....I hope the hell it will when I stick the new parts in it!

A new piston with new rings normally fixes this problem like a charm. if it doesnt, then there would be something else wrong with it. I love the fact that one can find good parts on Ebay for MUCH less than what the stealership wants for em.

heck i got a genuine stihl piston for an 036 on ebay for $20 AFTER shipping! and the sucker is NEW! i bet the dealer would want well over $65 and that is with rings too.. im one happy man.. i just watched a lot of *FIVE* new 026 pistons with rings go for $65 after shipping

Aussie, take care now, you might start liking working on saws :dizzy: .

Stealership. That's a keeper, OSA. I will now shamelessly borrow stealership.

Hmm.

I'm not familar with the currency exchange rate. What does a new 260 cost down there?

I saw this exact model today while hunting for a new exhaust gasket for my saw and they were asking around $750NZD which is not too far off the Australian dollar

$20!!...was that on Aussie or US ebay? I located one for $50 (US) + postage, I thought that was pretty darn good.
