why not call in a portable wood mill guy to appraise the wood for making timber?

Because the customer has hired me to remove the tree. The quicker I get this done, the more professional I look. I don't need another yahoo on my clients yard making noise and messes for two days after I'm gone.

Because I highly doubt that that figures into a competitive bid very well.. heck, its hard enough to get things done on time as it is, without all that fuss, fussing about..

:)

Unless all of the sudden and for some strange reason I should feel the desire to start fashioning park benches or something.. which seems sort of unlikely at this point!

Lol. Don't get me wrong, mds, I've actually sold a job or two to wood workers who were wondering if the lumber from the trees might be worth something. I give them the old schtick, most likely hardware, too many knots, rot, etc. no mill will bother with them, but I do know a guy ( my dad ) that has a mill and he might be interested in working out a deal with you. If the timber is fairly mint stuff my old man has no problem milling it up and splitting the boards with my HO's. Good deal for them and for him...but I ain't gonna make my client wait for my old man to bring over his mill, level it and set up on THEIR property so they can get a few boards. Not to mention what a PITA that would be to move your mill for a log or two. Either way, I stay right the #### out that deal. I get paid for getting the trees down and GONE. If you want to bring a few pieces back after working something out with my old man to process them, that's fine, but I get paid when that last stick is loaded.

okay okay it was just an idea...

one that has worked well several times. re the shtick, shoveling manure is fine, in a garden that is. metal is rare above 6', and those knots are highly desirable for some applications. milling is a value added service to some jobs, not all.

I try to get logs milled when it works out. I feel it's better that they go to a mill than through the chipper, or in the firewood pile. The trees in this bid though are all junk... rotten, cavities, and so forth.

Normally when I do jobs I try to cut wood to between 4 and 8 foot in length depending on diameter so that my buddy can handle it more easily with his loader. Dropped off a load of logs to one guy a few months ago like this... 4'+ and 20"+ diameter ash and sugar maple... ugly material. Guy was all kinds of happy at the time, then I saw him the other day... wants me to come back and take them away... too big for him to handle.

Tell him you will. $100/hr plus mileage on the truck!

What gets me is when they want the trunks left high, like 15 feet high. They think since its less tree that you are working that it will be cheaper but that seem to be tougher than notching the thing from the ground.

I love that one too!

I have been learning to bid it how ever the customer likes. We can get the tree down for this much and it will be X amount per hour to clean up/ buck up/ move/ split whatever they like there after in those situations.

I woke up this morning with oversized wood and wondered to myself "just what the hell am I supposed to do with this"...

big wood

Most customers dont know how much (volume) wood there will be. And get surprised with the amount in their yard. On large wood there is zero price reduction on cut and leave. Charge more for time if needed.
