It would not start, so I got it otd for $100. I had that funny feeling that it was the piston since compression felt a little soft. The rest of the saw is in really good shape and cleaned up nicely. So, my question is for the forensic experts here, what caused the scoring on this piston? It's only on the right side of the exhaust side.

Here is what it looked like before I pulled the jug:

I'll take a stab at it....could have been caused by all that caked up carbon build up?

The cylinder is already cleaned up and ready for a new piston/rings. Do I have to split the case to do the crank bearings?

It looks like carbon scoring. Probaly from using cheap oil. You might not have to do bearings unless it is slapping or there is play in them. Grab the end of the crank and see if you can move it up or down or side to side.

For just a few dollars more I would have sold you this 024 that is blowing 170 # of compression that I will be putting on the trading post. This is why I try to check the cylinder or do a compression test on pawn shop saws.

coulda been from carbon. coulda been from air leak. You'll never know now that it's already apart if you didn't test it first. Not much point in us guessing. I will say that doesn't look like carbon scoring. Looks like it was lean or straight gassed

ya know, I just looked at all the pics again and I think I'm leaning more to carbon being the issue. Just on one side, and there are some big chunks hanging around the ex port...

probably run at 20:1 with ratty snowmobile oil :)

I just read rallen's thread on his 026 re-build where he pulled the seals without splitting the case. I will check the crank bearings tomorrow. I'm kinda split on re-build or part out and i think I'd do better on a part out money wise, but then again I won't learn how to do seals and bearings:cool2: I also need to learn how to do a pressure/vac test so this is the perfect candidate.

Guido, I didn't need this one, it just looked all orphan like on the pawnshop saw rack...I had to take it home:clap:

Husvarnaguy, you should have seen the mix that came out on the tank....dark dark green like boat mix.

Fuel line is toast(soft and mushy) & I need to pull the impulse but it felt hard as a rock. Carb boot looks good. It has that SS screen type air filter, the thing was packed with dust along with the carb...really packed. So, if it was dust ingestion would it not have been scored on the intake side?

As much as I'd like to learn the things mentioned, I just have too many other irons in the fire. So...I'm going to part this one out. I'll shoot some pictures & list it down in the classifieds first. All the plastics are in great shape so if y'all need something PM me.

I confused, it's been a long time since I posted anything for sale. All I see are auction options....is there no way to list a bunch of parts on one ad? I'd rather just price out each part in list form including shipping, not do an auction.

BB, yeah I'm leaning that way too. None of my saws have ever had that wire mesh screen filter, all are flocked and I have never seen dust in my carbs(well unless you count the 009 that I gave away...what a crap filtration system that thing had)

I click on Auctions --> New Listing and see options for 1) Chainsaw auction 2) Chainsaw classified 3) Spare parts classified.

Why part it out? It looks to me like all it needs is a piston and tested for air leaks. BTW, that was more than just carbon scoring. Otherwise, I don't believe it would have wrapped the piston, far past the exhaust port.

I would clean the cylinder up and put a Meteor piston in it.

looks to me the saw was never cleaned and was packed with dirt. clutch side of piston/cylinder over heated.
I agree--I have run into this before where excessive heat in a certain area of the cylinder was suspected. Excessive heat can break carbon loose and that causes further galling.

Brad I started to add things up besides my time....piston, crank seals, sprocket & air filter. That will leave me with a $200 saw that's worth a wee bit more and a saw that I do not need. At least a part out will re-coup my $100 & maybe another $100.

Warped I think I have it figured out....thanks.

Who told you to use logic? :msp_scared: Rational thinking will not build your saw collection! :spam:
