I bought this a few weeks ago and have been using it ever since as my earmuffs. I think it works very well.

There's a mic in each muff that amplifys sound, with automatic gain control, so it cuts out with loud sudden noises. I can look down from 50 feet and hear what they are saying with the muffs on.

It is also an FRS radio, so i can talk to any of those cheap walkietalkies that you buy for the family camping trips.

It is a battery hog, alkylines last around 3 days (2 AA's) The cheapo heavy duties from the dollar store lasted 3-4 hours.

I did have to cut it off the headband and put it on an old peltor muff suspention that I had laying around in the garage, but that was easy.

Cost was around $310 delivered, I'm very happy with it so far.

A few downsides,
a little heavier
mic and wires do get caught more in messy trees
controls are small and not glove freindly

Too bad they don't have FM. I'll bet those kick azz on crane/ rigging jobs.

I don't believe in music on the job, so I would not get AM/FM.

There great for even a deadwood on a big oak. No need to yell any more, or take one ear off to hear what someone is trying to say, no more turn around and look....

I was thinking of music for stump grinding. It gets boring working alone with no tunes. I don't believe that would pose a safety hazard.

Here's the one to get with FM. Its better than the bright yellow WorkTunes model. The controls are bigger and more ergonomic and it has the same voice attenuation feature that JP's has. There's just no communication feature.

Nickle metal hydride batteries will blow away the alkalines. They're a must. -TM-

$180 for hardhat mounted peltor alert, $90 for a pacific hardhat....Christmas is too far away.

Radio freqs.
Alot of construction companies are on the "net" it would be great
if you could tap into them with those.
All youd need is a base station
"were cleard in the drop zone?
"Roger"
"Bombs away"
"BOOOOOMMMMBBBBBBBB!!!!"
And they hear it. Some great advertisement there.

Nice to know you can talk to family camping walkie talkies.
I just bought two of them werent that cheap thou.

I worked very briefly with a one horse outfit near Wilminton, DE that did LOTS of crane removals. It was their niche, and they did a first class job of it. The radio comm provided by the Peltor system was the key to their success. Everyone on the team was dialed into the net, and they were smooth and safe. It was cool for me to listen in to the flow, especially the very calm, subtle conversation between the climber and the crane operator.

I cut the headband off the wires and pooped on the regular old peltor muff suspention. Works like regular muffs.

Could you not wait until you got to the restroom?:)

I've been using those new batteries that can be recharged in 10 minutes and come in all the standard sizes. They are a little pricey, but work great!

I'd love to see a picture of how you mounted the muffs on your hard hat.

Music in the trees

JP, aside from your pooping habits, why is it that you're not a fan of listening to music or talk radio while you work?

Radio-ized muffies have made me a highly complient user of hearing protection. I catch NPR in the morning to keep updated on the worldly events, switch to a late-morning, 1 hour program that offers on-air Spanish language lessons, and pretty much from noon to the end of the day I'm between classic rock and Oldies. This is a strond part of what I consider a 'good life'

You could argue 'safety' and we could have a batting match, but I think mebbe its something else. Are you distant from radio station towers and have poor reception? Would your ground guys be offended at your singing in the trees and go on strike until you bought them their own radio headsets?

I find music during my workday to be amongst the greatest joys of doing treecare, right up there with the feel of a Silky saw magically slicing through its pruning duties, and climbing boots that footlock like glue and climb me around in dryness and comfort all day, every day.

So, did your Mama keep the radio too loud when you were a baby? Or does it match my main complaint; that of the inescapable commercials? What gives? Tell us, Illustrial Poobah.... -TM-

JPS,
Did you buy from Botach? If so, I hope it worked out for you. They have a rep for less than good service.

No problems so far. I'll know when i get the MasterCard bill though.

They did ignore me whrn I called looking for the muff mounts and they only have the headband style.

As for AM/FM in the trees, i think it is a communications/saftey problem. I sing on prune jobs from time to time though.

One thing I really hate is when there is a construction site near by and they are cranking the tunes so the whole neighborhood can hear.

I have peltor work tunes, although I have them only working in one ear so I can still be aware of whats going on around me.

Music keeps the brain stimulated, helps in concerntration and helps the day move with a little more speed. I just wouldnt be without them now. I think they make jobs safer as with music going your more awake, I know I work faster to.
