Pennsylvania chain saw picking

Prior to leaving for the Studebaker Swap Meet in York, PA I placed an ad on the Craigslist there looking for saws. All three of my ads in the wanted section were flagged, but the first one remained up long enough to get a couple of responses. After that happened, I put one in the Farm and Garden section that was not taken down. I suspect a local tinkerer was mad that I was encroaching on his territory.

The first response was from a fellow who fixes up some saws. Said he had a number he wanted to get rid of, so I took about a 25 minute ride from my hotel to meet him. This is what he had in the back of his Toyota FJ.

First up were 4 Stihl's, a 020, a complete 031, a partial 031 in a box, another complete saw I can't read the label on and three bars.

There was also a Pioneer P-38.

A Poulan 45.

A Pro Mac 55.

Two John Deere's.

On Friday I had a fellow from New York drop off a Sears D-44.

Here they are together.

I also got a nice Poulan 31 on the way home but have not had a chance to get a picture of it.

So; how does that work? You buy the lot at bargain prices, part some out, and rebuild those you think will sell ? Or are you in collecting ? I wish I was mechanically inclined to rebuild one of those little motors.

Thanks everyone for the ID on the Stihl. I sell very few saws and then only tend to get rid of the newer ones. However, space limitations and a lack of a job may soon dictate otherwise. I will probably bring a few to the Virginia GTG that I am willing to part with.

By the way, I tinkered with the Mac and got it to run. The prior owner said the clutch was bad but I found the chain was not riding in the sprocket. The saw had no bar oil (and l had none with me) so I shut it off before I found out if that fixed the issue.

So what did you get for your Studebaker?? Just kidding, nice haul! There is a guy on my local craigslist asking for saws, didn't think it actually would net results like you did.

Craigslist is basically regulated by the user community. If you feel that an ad violates the TOS (Terms of Service) you can "flag" the ad so it is removed and the poster will get an e-mail response to that effect. However, Craigslist does not make you register to flag nor do you have to supply a reason for doing so.

What ends up happening is that people will flag ads that they think are coming from competitors or might infringe on their business. Scrappers are notorious for this methodology.

I was only selling Studebaker parts, I did no buying at all other than the hotel, food, fuel and the saws. This is what I came home with:

The trailer is my parts shed. At one time it was full to the top, I noticed that the tongue of the trailer is riding much higher than it used to.

I have close friends that live near Altoona PA, I even lived up there for three months, so I am allowed to "poke the yanks". Though I am only allowed to do it three times a year, if I had stayed up there for six months my benefits would have been much better.

Kinda like Pennsylvania drivers that stop before merging on to a highway? What the hell was Penndot thinking when they thought up that plan? Stop signs at the end of on ramps, wtf?

Don't feel bad though, VDOT currently currently has a fetish for traffic circles in my area. Contrary to what they'd have you believe, they don't make traffic flow better.
