i really like this lanyard adjuster, in the manual it show where it can be used like a friction hitch SRT style. like something a roofer would use where the lanyard is attach to a anchor point I been trying it out climbing it seam to hold and advance with no problems

I've been using the grillon for 5 or 6 years. I have a 30 foot lanyard that I keep daisy chained. It eliminates the need to double crotch or M. If your looking to SRT check out the Rads or Rig.

Is the grillion merely a grigri with a long lanyard? Because I have a grigri and may try putting it to that use. Any suggestions?

You need to pick a suitable device for what you are intending to do with it. Essentially; No, they are not the same. Pretty similar, though.
