This oak was dead & cracked so I figured i'd put it to the mill. It came from up on the local mountains here in NM. I was after mountain maple (similar to sugar) but this presented itself so I nabbed it. Kinda cool, I found a .38 slug buried in it & it shows the cross cut in two of the slabs. Won't get much out of it but I got 3 nice 2" slabs from the center and two of them show the quarter rays. Good color, too. Should get a nice rustic coffee table or two. There's another next to it that's bigger and fresher, no cracks. I'll get it when I can.

Thanks for sharing the pic.

I've never seen mt oak. Do you have any closeup's of it?

I seem to hit every nail and bullet in a log. I was milling with a friend one day and he said "It not you hitting the nail its the nail wanting to make its presence known". Since he said that, I don't get all bent out of shape about hitting a nail or anything for that matter. I just wonder why it is there any change the chain and keep going.

Sometime ya just gotta "bite the bullet" and carry on.

I was milling a log in a ladys front yard. She came out and was telling me about the tree and she said there used to be a hammock in it and there was a eye bolt in the tree. She assured me she took it out of the tree. Just curious I took the metal detector over the log again and it was singing like I was wanding over my mill but, what are you gonna do walk away from a 30inch Walnut. I got the mill going again and I heard a noise that i figure to be really bad. When I flipped the board over there the eyebolt was. I just grazed it and it didn't even hurt the chain(not bad enough to back the saw out of the cut). It was just pretty neat That I managed to miss a 6inch eye bolt in a 2inch board.

I've been lucky so far with this monster Ash. Many years ago it had been cable stayed and I haven't hit anything yet. I'm still running the same chain in 84' x 3' to 4.6'. Have not started milling this one yet

If its in there I'm sure you'll find it. It wants to be known.
