Well, I finished putting the 1625 back together tonight. Got it all loaded up and ready to go. Hopefully will get to put it on a stump tomorrow afternoon.

I just got thru changing the cogged belt and pulleys over to a 3 groove v-belt setup. Total price was $219. Pictures soon to come.

I also just replaced the bottom, horizontal king pin and bushings and the vertical king pin and bearings. Total price was $250ish for the pins, bushings, and bearings plus one run to buy more grease and grease fittings for around $30 and one run to buy a couple tools for $40. I have some pictures of the machine while it was torn down.

I also replaced a few grease fittings that weren't working and got everything all greased up.

I did try it out for a couple of seconds on a big piece of oak that was laying by my house. The slop in the lower king pin was HUGE and I had just been living with it. Now it is rock solid. That is probably what killed the 2nd cogged belt as it was very hard to operate it without it bouncing. No bounce at all now.

I'm tired of spending money on this machine and hopefully I can recoop some of the expense soon.

I'll have some pictures up soon and let y'all know how it did on the stumps.

I am going this afternoon to finish the job that I started when the belt broke. I guess I'm lucky I even still have the job as that was about 3 weeks ago. geez.
 
How hard were the lower horizontal shaft and bushings to remove? Some say on the Vermeer 252 it's a real pain. Was that your experience with the 1625?

I'm sure I'll be due sometime with 2450 hours on machine now. Mine got alot better just by tightening the shaft to proper torque, but still not perfect.

Royal pain. The only way to get the lower horizontal one out and get new bushings in it was to hang the front like I did and take the vertical king pin out at the same time but they both needed replacing.
 
Was the lower horizontal shaft itself heard to push out once the nut was removed, worn into the bushings? Or was it just the bushings hard to remove? Once you removed that whole piece did you just put it in a vise and punch the bushings out? Did you need to heat them up or anything?

Did the vertical shaft come off easily once the nut removed?
Would like to know what I may be getting into.

Nice job, good luck with the machine, I have one and it been very good to me. My current problem is with drive motor, but it was a recall item so I am waiting for the factory rep to approve it. This will be second time. First one that came with the machine worked great and they took it out for the current one that now does not work:dizzy: Runs very slow. You should check with your dealer to see if your series motor was a recall item and keep it mind if it does screw up.
 
Why did you replace the polychain belt setup with the V belt setup? I know the V belts are cheaper, but you are probably going to go through belts more often now.

The polychain belt is a very good setup if the tension is adjust correctly. If not, it is just an overpriced belt.

The lower horizontal one came out pretty easy once I supported the engine side of the machine. I just beat it out with a hammer.

Old bushings, I just hit them out with a hammer and a big socket. They came right out and the new ones went right in. (Hit them in with hammer and wood block.

The vertical shaft was a pain. It has 2 bearings on it instead of bushings. I got the top nut off pretty easy and then the shaft itself is threaded and you are supposed to just unscrew it but the 2 bearing were stuck on there too tight. I had unscrewed it all I really could and didn't know what else to do. I leaned over one more time to look at it and , POP, the top bearing broke and it was free enuf to unscrew the rest of the way.

Once the shaft was out, I just beat the bottom bearing out thru the bottom with a hammer hitting on a socket and extention.

Dealer? What dealer? lol

The dealer that we HAD here was a joke. I called RAYCO to get the pdf for the parts so I would have the Rayco part number when I called the local dealer. The parts guy at Rayco emailed it right to me. He also told me that my local dealer was no longer a Rayco dealer.

I now have to call a dealer in another state to get parts.

The v-belt is a $30 belt and the cogged belt is $250. My hope is to save some money in the long run.

I've read about others doing it here and wanted to try.

What year machine and how many hours?

I've only got 230 hours on the meter, but I found out that the person that sold it to me lied about the hours that it had. (Harv's Sales in Detroit) It was supposed to be under 100 hours but I found out that it was a rental unit that had at least 1040 hours on it. 1040 HARD hours I might add.

So I guess it's got about 1,200 hours on it now.

Ive had v-belts on mine for 2 years and not one belt problem..

I too changed my Belt on my carlton from a Poly gt belt to a 4 groove v-belt to save money. It didn't work out to well. First off the v-belt must be tensioned very tight to keep it from slipping. Extra tension makes bearings wear prematurely. Another thing is when the v-belt begins to wear some it begins to slip. The cogged belt will NOT slip. After burning up a couple of v-belts and replacing the bearings i decided to go back to the poly gt belt. Hope it works out for you but it didn't work for me.
