Any good suggestions as to prevent a friendly 'pecker from continuing to investigate a landmark Cedar? Shooting him, is not an option...

What do you mean shooting is not an option. Thats always an option. Just use a high powered air rifle that doesnt make any noise.

I forget where I heard about this, but don't owls usually scare woodpeckers and other such undesireables away?

Hi Arbor Vista, I know this dont answer your question, but do Pilateds back there hurt your Cedars?? Our Acorn woodpecker, Melanerpes formicivoros, doesnt hurt Calocedrus decurrens. Dont seem to hurt the larger pines, or for that matter telephone poles. **** BUT*** Man they do drill holes and stash acorns in them though--lotsa holes!!

Place a pet raptor in the tree.

here I had visions of Jurassic Park in my head (no, they were 'velocirapters' )

Are they after insects? If so, get rid of the draw and maybe they'll leave on their own.

They're a gorgeous bird.

I never knew that Woody Woodpecker's laugh was a mimic of the pileated's song until I moved into the same neighborhood as a few such families.  I'm always happy to see and hear them.

They are a magnificent creature and I'd never advocate shooting one.

Kenn, you can add to your signature line " or stealth pneumatic weapons for special ops." :p

Actually I preffer suppressed sub-cals for that. I could tell ya how to silence a .22 Ruger MKII but I would probibly get suspended for that.

Kenn

Thats okay. -We'll discuss it the next time you come over to climb. I'll have to tell you about my 30-30 that sounds like a .22. :)

I've heard rubber snakes placed around where they are helps.
Had to bury one the other day. Someone shot one at a friends house, very sad. Incredibly beautiful bird.

Try hanging CD's in the tree. The sun flashing on them scares off the birds. I learned this from someone who used this method to keep birds away from her fruit tees, and I use it to keep a red-bellied away from our gutter early in the morning.

I agree with Glen, shooting stabbing or otherwise maiming the bird should not be an option.

Great idea...I have a whole shoebox full of them. Can you say 'packrat'. ;)
