I have gotten a decent size log 28" - 30" 8' long, is it worth milling into lumber? I always hear about red and white but what does this fall under? Groth rings are spaced widely and this was a yard tree but I see no signs of iorn in it anywhere (discoloration )

it's in the red oak group.

i'm not sure about milling it - lots of knots.

won't hurt to try though.

It's considered a red oak. Mill it up, see what you get, but watch for metal. The pins I've done are usually a bit lighter than NRO by a couple of shades, and have bigger growth rings as you noted. What do you have to lose? Pin oak is sold as a red in the regular marketplace.

unless they are buried knots it look clear on the outside ( i know that doesn't mean anything ) does anyone have any pics of it as I am sure it looks much different than normal due to the rings. I am going to mill it, I am thinking that it would make great slabs for tables. It will be alot easire to do that when I get the band mill ordered.

Check out a post I started titled "first time milling (
with actual pics)". There are some decent pics in the post of a real nice pin oak.
