So I just bought one of the new Pinto Rig Pulleys. The pulley itself is rated for 50kn. DMM (the manufacturer) recommends that you use it with an oval carabiner, like the Ultra-O. The question I have is where can I get a oval Rigging carabiner rated for 50kn ????? The DMM Ultra-O is rated for 24kn. Any thoughts on this?

Most aluminum beeners are rated at 24kn, which is at or near the minimum standard for life support beeners. Steel beeners start at around 50kn and go up. Start looking for steel oval shape beeners and you'll find what you want. They're generally cheaper than aluminum ones too, often less than half price. Not easy to find oval steel beeners though. Otherwise, just grab a D shackle.

Thanks for the info Shaun. Its been really hard to try and find a steel oval beener rated for 50 kn and above. But the D shackle sounds like a good idea. I will try that.

Where I've been getting some of my gear in Valdez has a bunch of steel Oval locking biners. They are painter black. I think they are rated at 37 kn but I may be mistaken .. I did get 1 oval steel locking biners there that I use on one of my rope grabs. I'll look in the morning to see what it's rated

You might go with a pear shape biner instead. They can be had at 50kn and $20 and the shape is more common so it's easier to find. THe pear shape is symetrical so it will load evenly just like an oval. Here's one;

Otherwise, a Maillon Rapide can be had easily from a lot of places and fairly cheap, chandlers, height safety shops, rigging shops etc. Oval is the most comon shape for these, and they are all steel. You'd want to take it with you so you get one that fits right. The screw part of the bate doesn't open very far on most, so you'd probably be wanting the biggest one that will fit on the pulley. 10mm is about 50kn, 12mm is about 60kn, 14mm is about 100kn, 16mm is about 120kn. They can be a pain to open and sometimes need a wrench, so I'd be inclined to jus leave it on and feed the rope end trough the pulley. They're nice and safe though - never open by themselves. Put a bit of loctite on the threads and they're very safe. Priced from about $10-$25.
