I recently was given an old Sears 917.60043 saw with a Power Products engine. The saw is in nice running shape and I would like to try it out. The bar is in nice shape but the 7/16" chains is spent. I spoke with a sales rep at Bailey's asking about a .404 chain and he said it would not work for long before chewing itself and other things up. I was under the impression that a .404 pitch would work, but not according to the experts. So what are my options, the crank is 9/16 in dia and the sprocket hub is 3" ID. Can I have something made? or have the existing spur modified to run a .404 rim sprocket maybe? Any suggestions?

Sprocket replacement.

Did you try to contact Sears for a .404 replacement? The sprocket for my C-5, C-51 and 600 D Homelites are 9/16" shaft size with the needle brg in place and 3.10" ID on the drum. Might be able to use one of them. Just a thought. Give Jeff S a shout with the measurements. Take care. Lewis.

sawjo: I might have something. What is the I.D. of the bore (O.D. of the needle bearing)? What is the length of the bore? The overall depth (bore length plus cup depth)? I am looking at a Windsor sprocket that came off a Sears David Bradley that is marked "DB133-A7". It has I.D. of 3", bore of 0.688", and total depth of 1.38". The spur (3/8" pitch, 7 teeth) is shot on this one , but the cup is fine. If worse came to worse, a new spur could be silver soldered to the cup. If I knew the size and configuration you need, I might be able to find a good one in my collection.

Hi Galde,
The sprocket has a brass bushing instead of a needle bearing and I didn't knock it out but the crank is 9/16". This sprocket is pretty big, cup depth is nearly an inch and spur height is 3/4" (Done with machinist ruler, not calipers). I can attatch a picture later if it will help.
Thanks.

sawjo: The closest thing I have is: I.D.= 3.1", I.D. of needle bearing=9/16", inside depth of cup=25/32",length of bearing=11/16", total length (cup edge to end of spur)= 1.5", total spur length=11/16". This is a 7-tooth .404 sprocket. I have a wall covered with old (unused) sprockets, arranged by size of the I.D. This one sounds very similar to what Lewis described for his old Sears saws.

Hello sawjo:

The old Craftsman, sounds a bit like the odd ball Bolens model 3900-10, I have with it's 7/16 chain set up. Sprocket and chain are totally shot on it, but don't expect to change it for now. The drum on the Bolens is sort of bell shaped, has a ring formed around the outside of the drum, which helps keep chips, etc, out of the right handed rewind. I doupt that one like it could be found to convert it to 3/8's or .404" chain. The old Bolens runs fine, after you get her started, but is an odd ball to get parts for. I think the sprocket for the C-5, C-51 and 600 D Homelite saws would work for you. Take care. Lewis.

Lewis,
Do you where I could get one of these sprockets?
Thanks. Joe.
