I would be grateful if you fellows with Stihl repair experience could advise me. I purchased a Stihl 041 Farm Boss with a broken front handle magnesium mounting lug.
I then located a good used Stihl 041 AV crankcase on Ebay, with additional parts, as part of the purchase.

Please advise if the following is feasible:
1) Swap good AV crankcase for bad Farm Boss crankcase. (Local Stihl dealer said part #'s were the same)
2) Use 041 AV Front handle, as I have the plastic piece with the AV handle mounts which sandwiches between the crankcase, and air cleaner cover.
3) Use an 041 AV air cleaner cover since the Farm Boss air cleaner cover is too deep and will not secure with these proposed part changes. Here’s where I especially need advice as I am not certain which 041 AV cover I will need to fit and secure properly.
4) Please advise as to any additional work I should have done with the saw as disassembled as described.

I appreciate you gentlemen helping me. This seems like a great forum, and I look forward to being a part of it in the future.

Hi, Akita! I just thought I'd bump your thread up, it's a legit question. I frankly don't know if you can do that.. . you may have really stumped these guys...

Is that a challenge I hear? :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Thanks, Andre

No, my posted question is legitimate--not a challenge. I am hoping the Stihl guys can help me. Right now, the 84 dollar question is whether an 041AV air cleaner cover will mount and secure properly to my Farm Boss stock carburetor. As I mentioned in my previous post, I have the plastic 041AV piece which sandwhiches between the crankcase and the air cleaner cover which the 041AV front top handle mounts to.

'Fish' sent me--still need Stihl 041 help, guys

Fellas:
Fish speaks highly of you guys, and sent me back to you. I think if you read my original postings, you figured out I'm putting 2 saws, both Stihls, an 041 Farm Boss, and and 041 together to make one decent saw. I solved the crankcase and handle mounting problem I had when I purchased parts from a gentleman, who among the parts I bought, had what I needed except the proper air cover. My original Farm Boss cover is too high, and I found an AV cover which is the right height, but doesn't fit (width & length) being to small on top of the underlying shroud to mate with the top sides of the shroud the way it should.

What's the best way to determine which air cover I need to fit the shroud? Look at the shroud part #; measure the top opening of the shroud LXW or across the diagonals? If one of you guys can help me figure this out, and has the right cover, I'll gladly purchase it from you for a reasonable price.

The only other thing I need is the pewter colored base plate underlying the carburetor. I believe it has a part number on it, but will have to phone my saw repairman to be sure. Same thing, if one of you fellas can help me with that piece, and has it for sale for a reasonable price, I'll buy it from you.

I don't know if the jpg of an air cover I found on the internet that I included with this post is in the ball park, but possibly is IT the one I need?

I know you guys are very knowledgable; alot of you are professional cutters, and I would be grateful for your help and advice on seeing me through finishing my assembly project.

Please assist if possible.

Hi, Akita, I recieved your message. You have gotten lots farther than I thought you would, so kudos. Unfortunately, it means you know a lot more about the 041 than I do!! It is really going to help you a lot as these older Stihl saws have lots of commonalities. I have an 041 NON-AV, so I can't help you fit the AV cover. To tell you the truth I though the AV cover was the same for all the AV models, but I am certainly not positive.

I can tell you what I would do..... do a search on the site for posts regarding the 041 AV, and see who has/knows about them. I would then PM them (I would make sure that they posted recently, people do tend to come and go) and ask your questions.

Sorry I can't be a bit more helpful, I just don't own both saws to compare them. On the other hand, congratulations on your project, it really sounds like a cool one.
