I found this between the bar and spike. M 02291

Just did some checking. My PMs 270, 271, 275, 276, 380, 385 all have numbers by the bar mount that begin with their respective model #s. What PMs of mine that do have tags, are identified as either PM manufactured or Bristol Aero (they bought PM but kept the name.)

The Skil 1680 also has '1680' stamped by the bar mount and a tag underneath that reads 'Made in Canada by Skil'. The 1690 is missing that tag and has M 02409 stamped.

Hopefully Lee will chime in with what is stamped on his 1690s.

One of the real problems IDing these saws is the lack of IPLs. Documentation seems to have disappeared. Somebody should get a job with Skil and see if that stuff is filed away somewhere.

I'm getting there. I spent some time on it today, mostly correcting some missing hardware. It will be awhile before I run it. I refuse to pull away willy nilly before I make sure it's not ingesting something it shouldn't be. I'll get some more pics up tonight or tomorrow.

If i get a chance tonight i will take a look at my three 1690's
for tags and stamped numbers. Your 390 is a nice example
of that series saw. I'm most curious to know what differences
are between the 1690 and 390. So far it looks like just the decal
on the top cover. Colors and everything i see in the pic's look
just like a 1690.

So I had a WTF moment today. A part I had in my head that I needed, was actually on the saw. Today I was able to spend a little time looking it over better. I knew the air filter was gone, and really thought the frame around the filter was gone. It is not, and that is good. That is the only part I really felt was going to be a problem.

Today I went to the local Ace hardware store and was able to find most of the hardware I was looking for. It was missing a few nuts and bolts, and I found some 1/2" metal tubing that matched what I needed for the lower brace. I spent $20 ($13.50 alone on the 4' of tubing) which brought my grand total invested thus far to $70. I think my fabricated brace matches nicely. My Mac 35 sacrificed its recoil handle today too.

That would be great Lee. The only way to know is to look at the few examples available.

OK, I took a look at mine and one has no tag or stamped numbers.
It appears that they were ground off. The other has a stamped #
of M 04880. And the really nice one i have has the tag that says
Skil Corporation, Made in Canada with a stamped # M 03727.
Nothing to really identify that they are 1690's or 390's

One thing I see here, that I haven't noticed on the other 1690s I've seen is the handlebar grip covers darned near the entire handle. The 1690s seem to stop just below the braces. The 390 covering here does seem to be all original.

Here is a pic's of my nice 1690 showing the handle bar.
Never paid much attention but Chris is correct that some
have full rubber wraping where some don't. This one doesn't
but i do know one of my others doe's. My other two are missing
top covers so who really knows what they are. Could be 1690's
or 390's.

I'm needing chain for this and am unsure what exactly I need. I'm thinking it is .404-.063-92dl. The current chain says Oregon and the rakers have 25 on them. I have a lead on chain but they say it is Oregon 27.

Wow that's a find Sam. Look at the drivers on the chain. Should be a number stamped on each one. May be faint due to wear. We can easily identify the chain by that number. Oregon 27 is .404-.063G 'micro chisel'. Good chain.

The # on the rakers of your chain will be the recommended depth gauge setting. Oregon 25 is tiny 1/4" pitch chain (and has "25" on the drivers rather than on the rakers). Can't be that stuff on your saw.....
