Hi to all. I posted a thread a while back looking for parts for a 1953, PM Rocket, K-1 series, chainsaw made in Canada. The saw is complete and in running conditon. The parts I need to complete the restoration are a muffler and chain. The chain is listed as 9/16" pitch PM chipper chain, it is .063 gauge and as far as I can figure it will need 59 drive links to fit the 27" bar that's on the saw. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I've sent several emails to our American and canadian friends listed on Mike Acres site and am hoping to get a few replies, but thought I'd post here again. Thanks. Lewis.

PM Rocket chain:

Hello to all again. I did some checking on Mike's site and found that the PM Rocket used Oregon 4 C chain, which was 9/16" pitch. .063 gauge. Any one have some of this chain. Just looking for 59 links of some decent used chain to complete the saw. Thanks again. Lewis.

Big chain

Lewis; check out E-bay,under "Giant saw Chain".This person is listing a 50" loop of big chain, the item number is 4321861470.I would have sent a link, but as yet to figure out how to,on this site.

Saw Chain:

Hi Al. Thanks for the ebay info. I checked it out and the chain is way to large for my needs. I'm starting to get replies from our canadian friends on a muffler and some chain. A reply I got from Nova Scotia is very promising along with one from Quebec. The fellow from Nova Scotia says that the PM Rockets use PM 50 chain and he has a couple loops of chain for a 19" bar and a muffler. I tried to see if .404 pitch chain would fit around the sprocket, but its too small and doesn't fit the sprocket at all. Will have to wait and see if the PM 50 chain will work. Trying now to get some info on that chain. I'm wondering if its 1/2" pitch chain. Thanks again for your reply. Talk later, take care. Lewis.

To Jacob J. and everyone.

Hi to Jacob J. Thanks for the ebay tip. I'll keep an eye on it and possibly bid on the manuels. Thanks Lewis.

Let me throw this out there to chew on. In trying to determine the chain Pitch. I don't have an actuall chain to work with on this saw. I took the Diameter of the sprocket (1 7/16") or 1.438 X 3.14 = 4.515". I divided by 5 ( the number of teeth) and got .903" as pitcch. Would this be the pitch or would you divide again by 2 which is .452". The .903" figure would seem to me to indicate 1/2" pitch chain. The .452" figure might indicate 7/16" pitch. Not trying to open up a can of worms, I don't pretend to be the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but just looking for your thoughts and information and maby a little constructive criticism. Thanks again. Lewis.

If this is scratcher chain you're referring to, sounds like you might be on the right track. Modern saw chain pitch can be determined by measuring center-to-center the distance between any three rivets and dividing by half.

Chain Pitch:

I know that you measure between 3 rivets and divide by 2 to figure pitch on a chain, but have no chain to work with, just the sprocket to work from and that's where the quandry is. Just wish I had some older chain to work with or compare to the sprocket. These older saws are sure a challang to figure out. I have a fellow in Canada that has some PM 50 chain for the PM Rocket, but hate to have him send it to me and it be wrong. There's a chance that the older saws may have been upgraded, years ago, to a newer chain. That's what I'm trying to determine. Guess I'll have him send it to me and see if it fits and will work. Thanks for your reply. Lewis.

Hi Lewis, Checked my Homelite 1/2" and .404 sprockets.
Calculated the same way you did.
.404 sprocket 8 tooth 1.875 dia.
1.875 x 3.14 = 5.89 5.89 / 8 = .736

1/2" sprocket 8 tooth 2.312 dia.
2.312 x 3.14 = 7.26 7.26 / 8 = .907
The 1/2" chain sprocket is for my Homelite 3100g.The .903
you got is very close to my .907

Hope this helps
Ray

To ray benson:

Hi ray, good to hear from you. Thanks for taking the time and checking your chain and calculating the results you posted. Looks like I need 1/2" pitch chain. The fellow in Nova Scotia, Canada says he has some old PM 50 chain he believes is 1/2" pitch. Looks like that's the chain I need. He says he also has a muffler, but will be busy for the next 2 to 3 weeks and will call me when he gets the parts ready for me. Will try to get more info on that chain. Thanks again for the reply and we'll keep in touch. Lewis.

To ray benson:

ray, just a thought if you still have the 1/2" chain out and handy. If you would place the chain around the 1/2" sprocket and measure as close as you can across the rivets and sprocket, center to center. Take that measurement X 3.14 and divide by sprocket teeth number and see what the results are. Just curious to see if it comes out the same. Thanks. Lewis.

Hi Lewis,
Measured the 3100g sprocket and chain. 2.62" across sprocket
and from center to center on chain rivets.
2.62 x 3.14 = 8.23 8.23 / 8 tooth = 1.03"
I did get a hoop of 1/2" chain made up from Bill W. on this forum.
Regards Ray

To ray benson:

Hi ray. I was thinking that if the chain was figured in that it would be closer to the magical 1.00" mark for the chain pitch. I sent you a PM reguarding number of links. Thanks again for your responce. Lewis.

Got some 1/2" pitch chain.

To all following this thread. I managed to go and see Larry Blair's saw collection in Cornwall, ONT. today. I was impressed and a bit amazed to see all the old saws. Long story short, he gave me a couple loops of 1/2" pitch chain to make the chain I needed for the PM Rocket. I tried it around the drive spricket and it fits the bar and sprocket like a glove. Now all I'm waiting on is a muffler. I may at a later date take the old sprocket to a machine shop and have the sprocket teeth built up and finished off and get some new 1/2" chain for the saw. Just want to thank everyone for their time and consideration and help, on this site. Thanks. Lewis.

J.J. I bid on the PM Rocket material on ebay and won the bid. First time I've bid on ebay. Just hope now it doesn't become contagious. Thanks again for the tip. Lewis.

Ray, I have an offer of 67 dl of 1/2" pitch, .063 gauge (new) chain for $61.66 including shipping to my house. Don't know what brand the chain is. Does that sound like a decent deal? I have no idea of what that chain goes for. Never had any use for it. I should look it up from the different suppliers and see what they are asking, I suppose. Just thought I'd see what you thought. It would be coming out of Canada, but in US funds.

Now hoping to hear from another fella who has the muffler for me. Take care to all. Lewis.

Hi Lewis,
Got the 1/2" .063 86 drive link chain from Bill W. in June 2003. It was $54.05 plus shipping. I did find an 87 drive link 1/2" on ebay in January 2004 for $37.00 including shipping. But the 1/2" chain only shows up there rarely.
Any luck finding the sprockets?
Ray

To ray benson:

Hi ray. Thanks for the reply. Going to hold off on the 1/2" chain for now. Just put in an order for 3 sprockets and chains for the Homelites saws from Jeff Sikkema. I called him and after a bit of checking and getting our measurement straight, he found the sprockets and did up the chains for me. Should have been sent out today. Seems like a real nice fellow to talk to and will do what he needs to to help with parts and his prices seem better than some others I've priced out. Still need guide plates for the bars. Bill W. is checking his sourses to see what he can find and also sent out and email to the address you gave me to see what he has. Can still use the old guide plates, but they're chewed up and would like to replace them. They appear to be the same for all 3 saws, the 600D, C-5 and C-51. Then all I need is the muffler for the old PM Rocket. Got a reply from a fellow in Canada who says he's got one for me. Told him to figure his price for parts and shipping to me, but haven't heard from him as yet. Hopefully soon. When I get my sprocket, chains, guide plates and muffler for my saws, I'll have them pretty well restored and rready to go. Will be nice to run them and see what they'll do. OK, talk later. Take care. Lewis.

PM Rocket:

To all who are following this thread. I received an email today, from the fellow in Canada. He sent out the muffler last thursday. So shortly I should have the saw completed except for some priming and painting. Seem all he wants me to do is send him some pictures of the saw when it's done. Which I will do. I'll also post some pictures here also. Thanks to all for your help, suggestions and patience. Take care. Lewis.
