If you cut limbs above your head it's mandatory to learn the timber shuffle.

I use two 6ft Jameson B-Lite poles together as a 12ft pole with a Silky Hayauchi blade. When using the Jameson "Big Mouth" pruning head, I have gone as long as 20ft by adding the two 4ft poles that came with my Big Shot. One of the key things I learned when using a long pole saw is to not try to saw it back and forth like it's a hand saw. Instead, make a single forceful pull stroke, then wait for the reverberation (bounciness) to stop, slide it gently back up in the kerf, then repeat. I was amazed how much frustration was avoided when I started using that technique. Here's a video illustrating such ...

I can tell you that i wont leave home without one. I or ground guys use mine for all types of stuff. Like prepping the base of a spruce for climbing. Yes, i could push my way in but why? My POWER PRUNER will take the abuse instead. My point is that its a great tool to have. I suppose theres a need for the disclaimers somewhere. But to say its always the last resort, or that your bombing limbs on top of yourself is not true for me. Maybe some of you guys should take the limbs in smaller sections or something. We have big elm and silver maples here in hard to access places growing in arches over top of everything. My pole saw or POWER PRUNER has saved me hours. Not to mention if you are safer closer to the tree. Obviously its no substitute for proper climbing and i dont know anyone that would rather lug it around than climb a little more. But its definately not the devil either.

The 21' silky is a sweet tool. I thought I would like it but I love it. When you are roping u can to get to any crotch in the tree pretty easily. And that 21' gives u an extra half second to run when you are ripping stuff out above your head:)
