possibly incorrect for arborsite ,,i dont know..but i do know i aint running for office so here goes..
i have been reading quite a bit about 2 cycle motors, how the make power, the function of baffles and so on..
i didnt know enough to tach tune my saws before i opened the mufflers up.
so now all i can do is ask.. is it possible
that users like myself who go in and open the mufflers up ,,are screwing up what an engeneer with vastly more knowledge than my self ,,has worked to create..this is not the dan henrys or ken dunns who really know what they are doing .. im talking about the john doe user,, with limited understanding of the 2 cycle...when i open mine ,,i then half to adjust back the idle and adjust the h l adjustments ,,i assume to factory specs..
what im wondering is.. what if i had tach tuned the thing the way it came ,,would the power be changed or did i just make it louder..

Tony it all depends on what you did?
i know not many people have a dyno or computer programs like i do to tell if it worked or not
not all saws are the same to some are not far of the power band and ext. size and others are way out
what i have seen is that most people go to far on opening up there muffler to a point that the motor in the cut is slower than before but out of the cut sounds great, you need some backpressure for the motor to work right

well i got such varied results i can see where u coming from..what it boils dn to is a man ought do a little consulting with saw builders... before he goes to foolin with these things..likeni said my 026 went close to 15500 when i reved it ..
the962 olympic on the other hand would barly get to 10.000 with front off the muffler..
what im really addressing is what isee as mabean blanket[open that baby up ]approach that some users
 have.
oh well ,,mine cutting fine now,, with power but it mite be inspite of my mods instead of because ofum..which was my point. :)

I have an echo 3000 that is about over 5 yrs old now. it was always a good running saw. The first thing I did to the saw was take the screen off the muffler (right out of the box). This past summer it got pinched in a log and fell to the ground. The only damage was a smashed muffler. It is a little louder than before and I had intentions of putting a new muffler on it but the darned thing runs awesome as it is. So i am gonna leave it be.

I did what I though I would'nt ever do and opened the muffler on my MS290.I always run a Stihl 50:1 mix in the saw. What surprized me was the amount of carbon on the piston and in exhaust port.I think the primary reason for this was because the muffler was so restrictive as for as exhaust is concerned.

I agree the saw will run cooler. In my opinion, and as important, the saw will also run cleaner with less carbon accumulation due to a very restrictive muffler.

So as I see it their are 3 benefits from opening a muffler.Saw runs cooler,a increase in power and a cleaner running saw(which along with running cooler should increase the life of a saw).

topnotch describe the exact damage .. ill try an make my muffler look that way..:) .. well since ive no intention of buying more saws. i may never get to test for an answer to the question..
can an factory muffler with proper adjustment be set up for the gains with careful detailed incut carb adjustments..
personally i think,, not to the degree an saw with opened muffler can.. if its the rite saw and the work is done with know how..
again im not talkin what dan and some others do... im talking about simple muffle opening,,so its less restrictive..aalsond ill reiterate all im saying is pure conjecture..
ask in the form of an question..
