I picked one up and prodded it at the Lewelvul (KY) expo a short while back.  It's a slick-looking little tool.

Salutations Cary,

When you go into town, think about stopping at Treetools in Lake Oswego, unless of course you've already been. I was in there poking around earlier this week and noticed a chainsaw powered Simpson capstan. They have all kinds of interesting bits, bobs and ends.

They are on Pilkington which is between Kruse Pky and Jean Rd just off of Boones Ferry.

Man I wish I had one of those. The price section is under construction. Anyone know what they go for?

I'm gonna guess 1050.00 I would be more interested in a hydraulic capstan on the chip truck or on the flatbed, woulkd like much more pull/lift capacity. 2 ton isnt that much power really.

Hmmmm How about a hydraulic capstan on a Skidsteer loader?

I looked at one of these at a trade show.
Talked with the man at the booth.
I asked him why the capstan was bent, he said in the ups shipping they dropped the box and it bent. I would like to see this capstan try to work in the arborist world. It would be good for a laugh.
the alum. replaceable capstan is really thin, tottally junky/walmart quality.
The engine is right on top so if you do any type of tree work and even the smallest cone or branch touches it the gas tank, etc WILL break.
Try a GRCS, you wont be sorry

Hi cary and Beavergirl!

Bailey's and Madsen's also carry the
Simpson, at about $400, just add saw powerhead.

Here's an old post I made:

Simpson Winch folks recommend using 3 strand on the capstan for better holding power. I dont have any, but do have a 0.5" 10000 lb tensile double braid that works pretty well. If you fill the capstan with wraps, it will not slip if held tightly. In a steady pull situation, I'd guess that a SWL factor of 5-1 would be acceptable stress forces on the rope, so that would be 2000 lb of pull.

I have used it to be pulled up in a tree, have lifted appx 750 lb tree pieces off houses, tip tied and lifted a hung 90 foot, 17" dbh cherry til it could be cut off the stump then butt chunked down, used as quick lift for long limbs to get them onto a speed line. I used an old 1/2" Arborplex (kinda slippery) to pull a willow out of a lake, piece by piece. We had a redirect block up 10 feet, best we could achieve, still made it hard to get up the lakeshore.

I modified mine to allow it to be bi- directional, however it is good to have a portawrap or other backup, as it doesn't work too well (motor shut off) as a lowering device. The wraps have locked up a couple times, which can be rather disastrous.

For straight pull applications, a traditional wire rope winch would be better. But I know the Lewis winch is poor quality. I have seen two very high quality products, one of which is the Solo, which is not imported to NA. The other, at ~$1800, I have not wanted to spring the $ for.

Here's a recent pic of us using it on a pretensioned elevated tight line to yard big brush piles up a steep hill. 044 with opened muffler providing gobs of power!

I have ordered the simpson, I already have a 66 powered habegger chainsaw winch which imho is better than a drum winch like the lewis.
It has a continous feed system around a big drive wheel but you dont have to feed the cable in at the end, just open the winch and feed it where ever suits. Takes 8 seconds. Not used often but a god send when its needed. Its paid itself off many times over, like alot of tools, you can live without it but after having it you wonder what you did without it. I love it, affectionatly named it "Waddle" as it weights about 100lbs so you have to waddle to carry it.
Im hoping the capstan will be useful in dismantling trees when the limb you rope needs to go up before it comes down. Will see!
Here is one of waddles newborn brothers

I asked about the winch, Here is the reply:

The engine is made by Honda - a four cycle 2.5 horsepower unit. The winch is built by the Portable Winch Company in Canada. Cost is $995 - we pay the freight if you fax us a check - or you pay the freight if you pay with visa, mastercard, or Discover. We include 100’ of rope at no charge .

Cheap winch

I picked up an 8000,lb pull Greenlee cable puller,at an auction,for $75.,that had a broken primary chain[double reduction].The repairs,length of #60 roller chain,and sprocket,were about $40.In remote areas,it has to be used in conjuction with a portable generator,but will pull a D4 cat,on a trailor useing a snatch block and 1" 3 strand nylon[of which I have about 2000 ft].This is an odd use for a cable puller,but works real well,and was cheap.
