Picked this saw up today on craigslist for $60. I think that was a good price. :msp_confused: It looks nice but the cylinder is scored pretty bad. I am going to buy one of the chinese big bore kits and port it. Any tips or info you guys might have would be great. One of the things that I have read about with these saws is the plastic clamp for the intake boot. That could be the cause of the scored cylinder on this one.

Start pulling the saw apart to see if it has the plastic clamp. The saw could have been straight gassed. Open it up and take a peek.

Hey, there is a deer under your steps, maybe 2 of them.

Keep us posted!

I got a chance to completely disassemble the 340 last night. One thing that I noticed is that the crank bearings can be pulled off the crank by hand. Are all these saws like that, or is mine screwed up? I will get some pictures tonight of the chinese bb kit that came in the mail this weekend also.

That is how they are.

I guess loose bearings equals faster assembly time in the factory:msp_confused: Seems like this would cause crank seal failure. One of my seals slid on and off without any resistance. It may be why the piston is scored.

Most times the intake manifold or base where plastic meets cylinder leak on this saw. I have a vid on things to look for. Yes the bearings pull right off.

I have read where 357 intake parts were used on these. Is that correct? Do I need the plastic part that connects to the cylinder with the metal clamp from a 357? Do I also need the 357 intake boot and carb mounting flange? Just trying to figure out what parts I need to order.

Here is my progress so far. Chinese big bore kit pics also. I dont think that the kit looks too bad for $36. The only thing that i have found that concerns me is how tight the ring gap is with this kit.

Yes the whole intake manifold and carb will bolt right up, no mods needed. I have a 199B on my 350 running the original intake manifold. Some guys say it makes a difference but I haven't seen much. The 357 carb on the other hand does wake them up.

Got a 357 carb coming.

Cost for project so far:

Saw------------$60
Big Bore Kit----$36
357 Carb-------$35
Total-----------$131

Still need crank bearings, seals, 357 flange, 357 bellows, 357 intake partition wall, and 357 intake clamp. I priced all of these parts at $66.72 shipped. So when its all done I will have $197.72 in it. Plus it will be ported. I still don't know if I can get my money back out of it though.

I recently did a jonsered 2141 (same as husky 340) to husqvarna 346xp conversion. I paid 150 for my kit but it was the correct bore for the 50cc 346xp. It also came with the upgraded boot and metal clamp. I used OEM circlips however, beware most am ones.i did a light port job and muffler mod and this thing is a monster. After break in I'm going back in to do more aggressive porting and probably a pop up piston to raise compression. There is a video on my thread. Stumpy has a build thread with awesome info as well.

I expect someone to come along any minute and tell you those ***** kits will give you herpes.

Great build BTW.......
