I use a Stihl MS361 that has a ported out muffler and square grind chain for blocking down wood....Boss was a faller for years before starting his company. VERY hard to go back to stock saws and round chain now. He has his own grinder and has it down to a fine art. That thing absolutely SMOKES wood!

Abso freakin' lutely.

I run or have run, aloft and grounded, ported: 192T, 338, 335, 346XP 3 total including the NE, 5100S Dolmar, Shindaiwa 488, Solo 651 SP, 357 (2),372--many, Dolmar 7900, and 3120XP. Some just muffler modded or dual port, as in 2139T Jonsy, 200T, 372, 044, 066, 660....

Favorite aloft is the 346. I should have Tree_sling'r port another one for me, and set it up with big dogs and 24" bar, as it, with an 18, is about as fast as a stock 440 or 460 with long bar....ergo, it precludes the need to haul up a larger saw, until the wood is quite large. Being light, small and nimble is key for ease of use aloft, and to make it easy on my aging appendages.....

I run the same saw as above. Love it
My boss runs a modified 044 but its to heavy for me. Unless the wood is exceptionally big then I run big dawgs. All my saws are ported, exhaust and intake. Base gaskets removed. Mufflers gutted and gone through. The B.M.E.P on a chainsaw is very high. Main improvement after that is AMSOIL SABRE 100:1 Everytime I tear um them down they look brand new.
I Didn't spend 27k at a motorcycle school for nuttin.

I've used several exceptionally hard running ported, jetted, and muffler modded 460's, also a 361, a really loud 260; the 460's really came in handy for some of the bucket work doing clearing projects (city contracts rebuilding streets and service) when we needed to bring down much bigger peices for the whole tree chippers.

The only disadvantage I've found to running ported and muffler modded saws for aerial work, is that they are so much louder than stock saws. Also all the other tree workers within 5 miles that heard it running and wanting to see it, and who did the work on it, how much will he charge to do mine etc. lol

I run the MS 660 magnum. Over here in Australia it comes off the shelf with a dual ported muffler. It's a unit and a half!!

The down sides of a ported saw in the tree is the compression and kickback. They pull that much harder and can be a ##### in the tree where you don't always have the best "footing" to be controlling a suped up monster. That said, fuch yeah I run em'.

Edit: I'm talking about 70cc and up saws. Little saws don't have enough felt compression to be an issue.
