Well, I finally made an attempt at porting a saw. I also opened the exhaust up a little. It doesn't feel like a huge improvement, but the saw definitely makes more power, because it will slip the clucth a lot easier now, as I discovered when I tried to push it too much. I've got a stock 651 and a Dan Henry PP346 coming soon, and I'll try to make some comparisons. My before and after timed cuts aren't very helpful, because I had to drop the rakers some to get a gain in speed, so I don't have apples to apples comparisons. The saw will definetly pull a bigger chip now, and I burried a 16" bar in sugar maple and it pulled it well. I guess I can't complain seeing as I have no idea what I'm doing :D

hey ever body starts somewhere..
if i was gonna try it id cheat and get dan or one o the builders to modify one for me then try an understand what they did.. luck to u.
ps im fairly certain thats what one fello did with my 372 pp.. as nearly evryscrew on it was not tightened well,,when i findly got it..jmo

Tony M;

Sounds like you had fun, but be careful, you are dancing with the devil!. Porting to any extent changes the power band and like you have found likely needs adjusting to your chain and cutting technique. From years old habits with torqy low rpm saws I have the habit of choking the saw too much.
If you can download the videos of timed cuts with sound, listen to them and see how consistent the rpms are, start to finish, with the operators who have fast times.

Well, I did try to go from what Ken Dunn posted about the 651 he ported. Don't worry Ken, I don't think you'll be losing any business :D I didn't expect to get the gains Ken did, but I don't feel like I got as much as I thought I would. I probably don't have good symmetry to the transfer ports, and might tear it down and try to match them more carefully with a template or something. I wasn't sure about the angle the transfers enter the cylinder. I didn't change the timing of the intake or exhaust at all, just widened them about .08" per side. I raised the transfers about .10" and matched the case. Maybe one of you porting guru's could offer some advice if it doesn't endanger any trade secrets. Otherwise I may have to do more research. The saw doesn't feel much faster, but it feels like it will hold it's rpm's under a lot more load.
