A neighbor had a fire who we are not on good terms with since he reported me to the city for feeding the birds and causing them to get sick and unhealthy at my bird feeders. We kept feeders clean every day. Meanwhile his quantity of smoke from wet wood caused me to collapse on the ground from asthma attacks. That is the history. So I do not talk to him and he does not talk to me.

For the past month we have not been able to go in our yard because of the huge billowing clouds of thick very smelly smoke coming from his fireplace chimney everyday. Sometimes the smoke is so thick at the ground level with no wind we could barely see our trees 150' from the house.

When he burns wood in his fire pit in yard the wood does not burn but smolders and smokes since it is uncovered & wet and he often uses unseasoned wood he cuts the day before. I have seen him do this. This is the guy who splits wood while his kids are riding the splitter and playing horsie.

I let the dogs out 1 night 2 weekends ago and saw flashing lights in our trees. I went to backyard and saw a pumper truck and supply truck at the neighbor's house. A ladder truck and 1 sheriff car was also blocking the street. The pumper truck was in his yard with hoses and fans were going inside his house. The ladder truck stayed on the street, it would have been a very tight fit for the thing to get into the drive with culverts on both sides of street and a fence on side of drive.
I obviously did not see any fire since it was out already with the fans going.

But since then there has not been any smoke billowing from his chimney and air is clean again. Temperatures have gone down to 40 and there have been no smoke signals from his house.

If it was a chimney fire it is really strange since the guy works in the fire extinguisher business and has a truck full of extinguishers. Maybe he isn't so smart after all?

It is only conjecture that there was a chimney fire or some fire related to fireplace, but he had billowing clouds of smoke everyday before the fire trucks came and now the air is clear of his smoke.

Chimney Fire

I'd be willing to bet he had a chimney fire. He had been burning wet wood and unseasoned wood and that is a sure cause for creosote buildup in a chimney.

I'm glad that you are getting a relief from his oversmoking chimney.

hate to say it, but maybe Karma had some mercy on you and frowned at the neighbor!
Maybe your neighbor will learn something from this lesson and make some more effort to season his wood properly.
Im in the same boat, just that my neighbor is far enough away we dont get the smoke, just the smell of really wet red oak burning. In fact, just yesterday he started cutting this years firewood.I asked him before why he doesnt get his wood in a good bit earlier, his reply is "I hate cutting wood in the heat of summer and the cold of winter"

I don't think the guy learned anything he splits wood as his kids ride the top of cylinder in a game of horsie. He sells fire extinguishers and installs systems he should know something about fireplace hazards.
He told the city that my bird feeding attracts mice I agree it does but you deal with it mice are everywhere so you keep your doors shut, right? He has a floorless shed sitting above the ground with trees and piles of debris next to the walls and he leaves the doors wide open all day. Then he blames me for mice getting into his shed. duh
I am surprised the house did not burn down or this did not happen sooner. I would not want my huge 2nd tallest tree in city a Chinkapin Oak tree damaged by his negligence though.

Even though we started burning late in Winter due to the stupid fireplace installers and their endless delays we did burn for about 1.5 months and now for about 15 nights.
After those firetrucks visited the neighbor's house I crawled up our roof cursing all the way up at the installers who used the wrong length pipe and made the chimney higher than what I wanted & needed.:angry2::bang: They made it much more difficult to get to the top and clean the chimney since I need a ladder now on the roof against the chase. If they had done the job right I would not need the ladder.

I looked inside our chimney and all I had was a light layer of soot only film thickness. I burn well seasoned wood and make a point of making a hot fire that helps take soot off the firebox fake bricks every other time I make a fire. It does not take much wood or time to get it up to 800 based on temp gauge 1-2" above the firebox.

sounds to me like he was breaking your balls with the fire pit and creating smoke. many towns have been banning them for that reason.

his problem now, since the fire department has been involved, is that any repairs he makes must be to code and they may make him put a liner in his chimney. since you stay away from him, it's possible his wood burner may not have been up to code and he may have problems with the insurance company as well.

don't ya just wanna go over and punch the face in of neighbors like that?

Out in the woods and just out and about I'm hear saws running in the distance. Also too, there's a lot of scroungers following the clearance crews along the roads loading up 4' sticks into pickups and minivans.

I often wonder how many of these folks are gathering in the fall for this year's heat.

Hoses & Fans means it was probably a bit more then a chimney fire.

Remember, a chimney is supposed to keep a fire contained so the creosote will burn up without burning down the house.

A partition fire -- where the fire gets out of the chimney and into the walls -- sounds more likely. Either the chimney was damaged (cracks, etc...I've seen creosote bubbling like hot asphalt from between bricks at bad fires in old, decrepit chimneys), or over time wood against the brick/metal was essentially turned to charcoal from the heat till it was able to catch fire from heat alone.

A city fire truck probably inspector was at his house the Monday after the fire.
He also has a wood burner smoke stack coming from his side wall of garage that ends below top of the walls?

We got back at him with a stinkbomb of our own and perfectly legal during a backyard party he had and wind conditions were perfect. We fertilized our trees and lawn with some sort of full strength non diluted emulsified fish oil product. Believe me it stunk so bad I was gagging as I sprayed the very fine mist out. Everyone at his party cleared out of his yard.:cheers: Gee I thought full strength would work better and faster.

The city has banned burning leaves because of smoke, but dropped any complaints options people can make for noxious odors from incinerators from homeowners . They also allow fire pits in yards but with restriction of seasoned dry wood.It seem most people around our neighborhood do not know a wet piece of wood from a dry piece. People behind us also burn wet wood but luckily they are usually far enough away the smoke is dissapated.

Some days I feel sad because I really dont have any neighbors close by to visit and bond with. Then I read your thread and am glad about my setup.

OK, OK, Forgive me, but I'm one of those people who are still gathering for this year's wood!

I have had really bad luck scrounging this spring/summer, but now that I found a farmer with some woods, I'm taken care of for the next few years. I'll be good from now on - I promise!!!

lol...count your blessings.

i've got my fair share of idiots for neighbors.

i planted a wall of arborvitae trees 400 feet long and 3 feet apart to block off one jerk. unfortunately they're only like 2 to 3 feet tall right now.

RCR, admit it. You sat around one night frustrated over the bird seed debacle, and got all liquored up on grandpa's cough syrup. You belly crawled thru the woods, scurried up the side of his house and chucked a half gallon of Coleman fuel down his chimney.
Now that's Karma....

BIL did similar with his favorite neighbor. Took about 10 years to get it where yo couldnt see through. Patience my friend.

Sorry to laugh at your problems, but I had to chuckle when I read your post. I've never heard of anyone being reported for feeding birds, but I can definitely understand what it is like to feud with neighbors.

When I lived in the city there were neighbor problems but then I moved to the country where the nearest neighbor is a mile away. You would think that there would be no reason to feud with someone a mile away, but you would be wrong.

Actually, most of my neighbors are good people but sometimes we disagree on certain things and sometimes that creates hard feelings. I don't know the answer but it makes me feel better reading your thread and realizing that I'm not the only one. :)

Yep, chimney fires can happen even if you do everything right and sounds like your neighbor did everything wrong.

Sounds like a good idea on paper or in this case on the screen. But with my back problems it would take a few days to crawl on belly (which I can not do) so I would have to back crawl then scurry up to his roof with the cane in hand and fuel. By the time I dump the fuel I would fall off the roof due to back spasmming and I would need the rescue off to jail.

That is why I used the emulsified fish oil instead, much easier and I could do over & over & over...
