I’ve got a Poulan 330 and pulled it off the shelf to exercise it a bit from last year.

Old memories came back quickly…

Sometimes when you pull the rope start, when you hit the compression, it will stop dead and just about rip your fingers off the starter handle LOL! Other times, when it fires for a second, before you can get your hands off the rope handle, it will jerk the rope back home - again ripping the handle out of your fingers.

My brother also has a 330 and his is the same way. Both of our 330’s have been like this since new.

What the heck is going on with these chainsaws? Are all of these larger Poulan saws the same on the pull start difficulties per the above and is there a better method to avoid this starter rope dead stop and kickback?

Any sage advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

I have a saying grip and rip it like you mean it. Dont twinkle toes around trying to start saws. Unless they got those freaking easy start features.

Now if your older or have bad hand or shoulder issues. You could put a stihl rescue handle on like I did my dads when he got older.

If it's just high compression, not much you can do except get REAL good at drop starting and maybe even add some weight to the saw to provide more inertia. If it only kicks back when it fires, you could retard the timing by 5 deg. Just shave a bit off the flywheel key and rotate the FW slightly clockwise. Makes a huge difference.

Easier to install Stihl elasto start #1128 190 3400 (better version than the part that starts with 0000 xxx xxxx
Makes a huge difference and no engine mods required
Really reduces that kick that goes through handle then to your hand
