I have a Poulan 3400 chainsaw which I have used very little. I got it out and put new gas in it and a new plug and it starts right up and runs and idles fine if I have it on half choke but even after I have let it warm up and have reved it up it will die when I push the choke in. It will run and cut OK with it at half choke. Any ideas?

Air leak possibly???? Time to rebuild the carb???? I am no expert, just throwing out ideas...

Have you tried adjusting the carb screws? I've used that exact saw for 27 years and only had problems when I didn't have the carb adjusted right. Try adjusting the idle screw first, then the L screw.

I would check the carburetor out first because more than likely the gas has just sit in the carb and may just need cleaning. I would check the condition of the diaphragm also. I am not sure how familiar you are with the carburetor, if not much, let someone else check it out. Many shops do not like taking carburetors apart. It does not sound serious and not to expensive to fix.

I have adjusted the carb screws according to the owners manual and put a new air filter on it and put in new gas. I had to put a new hose on as the one that was on it crumbled, perhaps I never got it on right or it is not sucking right. I may take it to a shop as I as not a carb man. Thanks for all replies.

If the main gas line was shot

Try the impulse line... From Case to Carb, about 2" long...

Again, Just ideas,

I know there is someone who can confirm tonight...

I am at the hospital right now, but tomorrow I can look for you. I had the same problem on my Father in laws saw (Same saw) and it was the impulse line. As I remember just under the carb mount on the head is a small nipple that the impulse line (a piece of fuel line) fits over, it comes through the shroud and connects to the carb opposite side from the fuel line, don't give it too much line as it might pinch off. Again, since you mentioned the chewed up fuel line, this is exactly what the problem was with my FIL's. Easy enough fix, and cheap...

Just noticed your quote

I see you asked about the vent line. I can't remember the layout of vent line/fuel line/impulse line. But I remember specifically that the tank on the poulan was one of the highest pressure tanks I have ever seen, or been sprayed by. I think the vent line had a small piece of copper flocking in the end of it and sat within the shroud as well. Again, I will look in the morning.

How long was it sitting?

How long was it sitting?

It sit off and on for about 5 years. I would start it once or twice a year but never had a need to use it. It would start but then the fule line hose crumbled and I took it apart and replaced it [I hope right] but it has never run good except on half choke.

+1 on checking all the lines, not just the fuel input line. After that, if you are not much of a "carb guy" you could just take it to a service shop.

Agree completely - there are several other fuel type lines that no doubt have deteriorated similar to the fuel line -

Check it out. Baileys (site sponsor) has some pretty knowledgeable folks that can help you aut as well...
