I installed the carb kit as per the suggestions on this forum, and redid the fuel line and filter. Cleaned everything and reassembled. Started on the 3rd or 4th pull! Maybe would have started sooner if I'd remembered to set the throttle on the handle. I let it run for about 15 minutes, gunning it every now and then to blow the crap out. Idles great and screams on the top end. It sagged just a little on full application of throttle at first, but that soon almost disappeared. Maybe a touch on the low speed needle will help this.

I drained the gas and let her run dry, then wiped her down. This saw is almost completely rehabilitated, thanks to you guys! I plan to have the chain sharpened as the last time I used the saw I remember getting into some dirt while dealing with some low stumps in the yard. I have some chain questions I'll post separately.

Once again guys, thanks so much! What a forum!

Before you take her out for a spin check your sproket for wear, no sense streching out a new chain on a worn sprocket. If you have not replaced it since the saw was new, it's way past due. Your new chain will thank you. I had my Poulan 4000 reworked and it was in need of a rebuild on the carb and new lines. Got a power mached bar, two chains and a sprocket from Oregon Chains.
It was running even after the bolts fell out of the carb and the carb fell off, it would keep running, you couldn't shut it off once the carb fell off,you had to bury it in the wood to stop it. Fixxed that problem, new bolts and some locktite. Needs to be replaced with a husky 372, The 4000 didn't have a chain brake like the new saws. Hate to put it away for a new one because it still runs but safety says I need a chain brake and my elbow tells me I need more anti-vibe. It doesn't hurt for your chainsaw to have new chainsaw buddies, mine like to have lots of new friends, there's a dozen of them hanging out in the shop now.
