Hi, I'm a daily lurker but first time poster.

Anyway. I have an old poulan that floods itself terribly.

I'm pretty handy with motors, but admit that most of my experience
is with Briggs 4 cycles. (kart/mowers/etc)

It's been stored for years with gas in it. I had to fix the oil pump (which I did!).

I have not yet taken apart the little Walbro carb. All I did was squirt Carb cleaner through every hole I could find. The timing key looks good and I have good spark. I have bad enough flooding that it runs out the muffler.

If you can tell me where to start looking I would appreciate.

I have no problem taking the carb apart and replacing the diaphram or whatever, Just did not want to take it apart without asking first.

Yeah I know! go by a real saw, but it's my neighbors, My poulan works!!! LOL!!!
:) :)

The fuel metering valve might be stuck open in the carb. The carb needs to be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. the fuel metering lever needs to be checked and bent to factory spec if necessary. The fuel metering diaphragm might need to be replaced if it has lost its flexibility or if it is cracked. A full carb kit is probably in order.

Thanks for your help. I have got it running were it could be used. One more thing if i might.

I have installed the Carb kit on the Walbro SDC carb. It runs now and sounds pretty good but it bogs down in the cut (some) . It cuts 8-10 inch hickory pretty well but if you lean on it very hard it will bog down and die.
My smaller chainsaw will cut better.

Can anyone help me with what to look at next. Any help would be appreciated as I would really like to get this running for my neighbor.

One more thing, it only has a low adjust on the carb, the high adjust is plugged off and it seems as though it runs better if I have the low adjust screwed out a little farther than i think I should have to. (about 2-1/2 turns). Like its far enough out that if it screwed out any more it would fall out. Thanks!

Poulan carb problems.

Hello daemon2525. If the saw sat for years with gas in it you may have to start with the fuel filter in the tank and go through the whole fuel system and make sure the, filter is repalced, hoses are not cracked or rotted and sucking air and you may also have to disassemble the carb (again) and give her a good soaking in some carb cleaner for a couple days and blow her out again while she is disassembled. You want to make sure she's getting fuel and not running too lean. Also check the impulse hose or passage ways to make sure they are not restricted or plugged. Just my 2 cent worth. Take care. Lewis.

Thanks everyone. We fooled with it again last night and decided that it ran well enough that we would not take it apart again yet.

I just did not know whether when it was bogging down whether it was getting too much fuel or not enough. I think that I have learned that it is not getting enough and that a passage may still be partially clogged.

Anyway it seems to run better the more that we run it and we have a large 70' tall oak coming down this weekend. We will run it some and see what happens. Thanks again for your help.

My dad had 2 or 3 of those,3.7 cu in saws ,but older models .You would have to know him,to appreciate it,but he could not help himself,he had to "tweek" them.He broke the crankshafts,on 2 that I know of,maybe a third. That is when he went to Mac.,and of course tweeked on them. :)

The saw on ebay is made by Roper, not Poulan. I have half a dozen of these. Good strong saws! Most were tossed when people tried to remove clutch with hammer and punch. The fibre clutch shoes won't stand that punch. You might have to go deeper into the carb. Sometimes the Welch plugs have to be removed for a complete cleaning job.
