Poulan xxv recoil

Can someone please explain to me how the rope is suppose to say in the recoil on this poulan xxv deluxe? I've tried big knots, I made a little metal cylinder with a hole in it, nothing works. I get maybe 10 pulls then it just let's go. It's driving me nuts because it's a great saw otherwise, I just can't rely on it as I don't know how long the rope will last.

Am I missing a part, or is it suppose to be just knots holding the rope in?

This is from the Model 20 service manual but I suspect the XXV is similar.

That's how my 20d is but this one has a totally different setup for the rope.
