Proprietary? Aren't all saw designs proprietary? You can't just swap parts between them... Well, carbs maybe.

Maybe you are thinking of the elux "open" design approach where you can buy the same saw under many different names (at many different price points)

I think he means in the way that they control & limit their saws and parts (and information regarding both) to brick & mortar Stihl dealers only.
