I am thinking my guy told me around $320 or $340 for a reel. I am thinking he told me I will get 20-30 large chains out of a reel.

Just got off the phone with my guy. He didn't have his book in front of him but said it's just over $300 for a hundred foot reel and I would get approximately 28 large chains out of a reel.

I think it worked out to be around $15 per chain and I cut 20" and 24". Lasted me around 2 years but I don't do firewood. Not yet anyways. The only things I get from local saw shops is the occasional part. I love buying in bulk cuz once you paid for the stuff it's like a year or so before you need to reorder and you always got alot on hand. Once you start cutin your own you'll never look back.

So a 100' reel has 1640 dl, a 20" loop has 72 dl, that's 22 loops in a reel if the reel cost $245 its $11+ a loop. I don't see how its worth it to save a dollar or two a loop yo make ur own? Am I missing something?

Not trying to start a pissing match or anything but all the costs everyone is posting for what it costs to make a loop are higher or the same as what a pre made loop costs from baileys.

I used to make all my own chain, actually enjoyed it but once I figured out the costs it didn't make sense anymore. If making your own works for you more power too you, I am asking to make sues I am not missing something here. We order a lot of chain, if there is a better way we could save a lot of money. Last months order was over 75 loop

Buying pre made chains is not going to make or break me. I would be getting them for about a third of the price than I would locally if I made my own. It's more the convenience factor of not having to order them and wait for them to get a cut rate.

Plus I like working in my shop on stuff. Keeps me out of the bars. ;)

Never have done this before, but I was gonna order a spool of chain for my chain saws ( Stihl top handle and pole pruner)from Baileys and start making my own, but the tech guy said it's much cheaper to get the pre made ones. is that true, and if not from there where should I get them from?

It's pretty simple math to figure.

The specs on a spool of chain (any pitch) will tell you how many drive links are in the spool. Divide that by the number of drive links in your loops and you will find out how many loops you can get out of a spool. Divide the cost for the spool by the number of loops and you have your cost per loop. Compare that to what you can buy pre-made loops for to decide if it is worth it.

As noted, you have to figure in the cost of a spinner and breaker (around $100 at Bailey's when on sale) if you don't already own a set, although, those can be nice tools to have around for fixing and salvaging chains as well.

A lot of times, it is not any cheaper to buy the spool, because sponsors like Bailey's will have common sizes on sale, and will give you a bigger discount if you buy several loops at a time. Sometimes it is more expensive to buy a small spool (25 or 50 feet) than to buy the pre-made loops.

But if you know the costs, then you might be able to pounce on a good deal, such as when spools go on sale, or if you see some posted on eBay or CraigsList, etc.

So for you guys that make your own chains, what is the best tool for the job?

That's about what they go for the 14" here Jeff.

I wouldn't worry about buying pico chain in bulk. As has been mentioned, It would only be worthwhile if you had all of your ground saws running the same spec bars.

No problem Larry, You would not believe what I pay for a chain on a 3120xp,
We have an account and been with them for over ten years.

I make my own chain, I like to stockpile things because the price of stuff only seems to go in one direction and that is up. I like to make up several chains so if I run into a d#!* nail or post and ding up the teeth real bad I can just put a new chain on verses handfiling for a long time. I take great pride in handfiling but when you ding em bad its time for the bench grinder.

Not trying to start an argument here, but someone said the pre-made loops at Bailey's are the same or lower price of bulk? Perhaps in SOME pitches, but in 20LPX, Bailey's gets about $1 per foot. If you do the math, a 25' reel is about 43¢ per foot, and the 100' reel is about 31¢ per foot.

My local dealer sells Oregon for about $27 per loop, so kinda expensive for me. And by the time I add shipping to Baliey's price, $7.95 per loop, or $23.56 for a 25' spool, why... bulk purchase just makes sense! 924 links will make me 11 chains, so I can make my own for about $13.95. Mind you, I need to buy the Granberg break-n-mend ($50) the first time, but considering 11 chains locally would cost me $297, or bulk from Bailey's would be $153.55 + $50, I will come out slightly ahead on my first 11 chains, and save 50% on all subsequent purchases.

Having said all of that, if you only go thru one or two chains per year, it might not be worth it to you to make your own.
