I finally decided to vote Husky. I actually own more Poulans than anything else. I'm really impressed with the little Solo I got from Tony Marks. The Dolmar 120si is amazing (discontinued but awesome!). I like Echo products-they know how to cannibilize and blend great features from everyone else. I've never owned a Shindaiwa but my dad had one for several years and I ran it a couple times-Nice saw! Actually I like Huskies packaged in red and black-Jonsereds are a handsome saw but the choices are more limited and cost more. I simply am not a "brand man". I like tools that work and there are a bunch of good tools available from different makers. I'm impressed with Stihl engineering but don't like the exaust tone on their bigger saws-sets my teeth on edge
I voted Stihl as I am a Stihl kind of guy but I don't hate any of the other saws. Well maybe craftsman and green poulans. Never owned either but had very bad experiences with them both. Both Husky and Jonsered make awesome saws! They just dont feel right to me. Hey Husky 288 and StIhL MaGnUm maybe you two should switch names.
Well if I have to pick from the list, I would choose Huskys. I have a 395xp and a 357xp and love them. But Homelites are the saws I have the most of. Jonathan
I picked Husky because that's what I own the most of and seem to reach for most often. But am happy to use anything that works right and gets the job done, no matter how offensive the color.
Yeah Brian, I considered putting Homelite and Mac on the list but I hit the 10 choice wall with current manufacturers --and those 2 are essentially dead.
I think that Poulan lasted because they didn't approach the consumer market the same way as Red and Yellow. They held on to a large share of the "medium" saws by marketing through Sears and their cheap 'consumer' variations of the S25 tophandle were simply better saws than the little Macs and Homeys. Presently Poulan has gone weird with their Wild Things and Woodsharks but that market is almost all theirs-A few Italian Homelites for competion and the private label Solos (at higher cost and more limited availability) are about all they have for competion in that niche. (They also have the Poulan Pro line at the hardware stores-giving a more upscale option to the consumer. Theoretically the Poulan Pros should have tighter tolerances etc. I don't know if that is true but they certainly look better! I was so impressed with the performance of the PP330 that when it disappeared a month ago I bought another.)
Electrolux has put some engineering into the Poulans as well as their marketing savvy. I believe they will be the dominant low priced saw brand, and actually be good values for the lower end of the market.
They would not have made it this far without Electrolux as their parent.
McCulloch and Homelite were just way behind the curve on design and performance. When the overseas saws arrived on these shores it became a world market and they just did not have a world class product. They were blown away. I t wasn't just mass marketing that killed them, it was also and out of date and inferior product. They suffered a bad case of "Future Shock".
