Found this while logging yesterday. It was under 6 inches of top soil. The very top of it became exposed after felling a tree. It's pretty cool to think however many decades ago someone was right there cutting the same land I was.image.jpg

Yes that is awesome... what you think from 40s?

Yes seems to be !
I just cut fire wood mostly,.. about 6 cord per year. I have also cut a lot of logs for lumber and built an addition and 2-3 out buildings and a Pole barn with that lumber over the years. I own 70 acres about 65 of which are wooded. I don't do the kind of logging you folks do I use a Kubota and Farmi winch and some old Partner 500s and 5000s. I am always on the look out for felling advice and wedging trees over ect. I think there are probably more woods related deaths from people in my category than yours, Mostly because we don't do it 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I cut alone and am always a careful as possible but whenever I can I try to learn something I may not know a lot about.
Like I said I cut mostly Firewood Beach, Rock Maple, Yellow Birch. As of late I have been rehabbing an old woods road that my Grandfather put in 60-70 years ago. I have been doing a lot of ditching and putting in culverts moving rocks ect. I have a 30 hp Kubota with a Woods backhoe with sub frame. It is small... tiny by lg equipment standards but I tell you what I have made some large improvements over the last few years with it out in the woods. So that is me, and I like to sit here in the evenings and read about the big jobs that go on in the rest of the country done by loggers like yourselves. Jeff

Well I do do it commercially but not full time. Like you I use a tractor and winch. 43 horse with a 9000 pound fransgard. I do lots of smaller jobs that aren't worth the big guys time. It's a great way to earn some extra income, I'm hoping to do it full time someday
