How much would an Vermeer 252 with blown engine be worth? It has approx 550 hrs and I think its an 03-04 model. A friend of mine has one and he told me to make him an offer on it.

Thanks, Craig

I bought a 2002 SC252 that had 12 hours on it, missing the engine clutch and hydraulic pump 2 years ago for 3,000.00.

We just got an 05 with 700hs and a trailer for $5000. The machine works great and even has a 3 mo warranty. I would think that an older machine without an engine or a trailer would be worth no more than $2000.

In a thriving economy, an 04 with 500 hours on it should bring $7k even without a trailer. In today's economy, that number is likely closer to $5k. Without the engine, subtract about $1800 plus labor to switch it out.

$3k wouldn't be unreasonable. With a total investment of $5k after you add a new engine, you'd have a pretty decent machine - assuming the bearings are in good shape still.

If it has greenteeth or yellowjacket teeth or a sandvik wheel on it, it's worth a few hundred more than a machine with the standard wheel, pockets and teeth that the 04's were set up with.

When it doesn't have an engine on it this narrows the customer base and drops the price dramatically. Sure you can buy an engine for $1,800 and install it and mess with it to get everything right - but there are very few willing to put up with doing that.

I'd offer $1,000 to $1,500 - you'll end up having $3,000 to $4,000 in it by the time all the little stuff is taken care of.

good advise.

I have an 07 with 360 hours, new bearings and jack shaft and trailer for $8000 and it's not selling. It will eventually but last year I would have gotten $9k and it would have sold in a month.
Listen to Arbo Pro and Bigstumps, they are on the mark.
Trailer is worth $1K (if you can find one).
27 hp Kohler, $2K and 2 to 3 hours to install.
Greenteeth, $260 i think.
(check out the bearings, there is a reason the engine is bad).
Factor in the risk of buy something use and not running.
And the pain in the ass factor (like you don't have better things to do with
you time then put together a grinder).
I'd offer him $1K but that's wholesale, maybe settle on $1,500 if I had nothing better to do (but when is that the case).
End value is about $6,000 without the trailer.
At least you will know the engine is good.

I've been watching used prices hoping for a poor economy deal but it seems the used prices are holding.

I was looking at it as a winter project for us when we get slow. I know the guys that work for him and if i was a betting man I'll bet on they ran it out of oil or let it get hot. I was thinking about 1500 but by reading some of the post all that would do is insult the man. I guess we'll see I really don't care to offer him much more than that because I really don't want to be grinding stumps. I though I might could come out ok and use it for small ones and still sub out the big ones.

I don't think an offer should ever insult anybody. If they don't want it they say no. Both parties walk away.

Don't be pissed at me just because I don't want to give you what you think somethings worth. Find someone else to buy it.

It is amazing how many times on Ebay I see stuff not meet reserve and it just keeps getting relisted. Obviously the seller has not come to grips with the true market price.

I would much rather have a customer tell me what they would pay me to grind their stump than just say they are going to "think about it" At least if they let me know I can make the decision if I'd do it for that.

Excellent point

That's where I'm coming from in thinking the machine is worth $3k. With a new motor installed for around $2k, you have $5k invested. $5k for a machine with a used motor and no history of how hard it's been run would be a risk but $5k for a machine once I put a brand new motor on it is a pretty sound investment. That is assuming the bearings are good. If not, then the price needs to account for such.

I'd say a fair bargaining range would be $1500 to $3000.

Don't pay much

Its worth about $1000 tops. Worth maybe $3500-4000 with a brand new engine. If it doesn't have hyd. steering with dual wheels its worth $500. Problem is with a blown engine you really don't know about hydraulics, belts, bearings etc. Ever heard of buying a "pig in a poke"?I wouldn't touch it. You can buy these running in good condition on ebay for about $3500.

Howel I am going to sell my 4400 with remote if you know of anyone interested. I know you like this style machine pretty well.

Edwards, good to here from you. Yes i might know someone. What year model?hours? any engine, mechanical or hyd issues? What are you replacing with? Oh and what are you asking? thanks

Howel I am sorry I missed this. Ok the goodies on the carlton 4400 grinder grinder. I bought this machine off ebay a few years back. The engine which ran fine would smoke when cranked up for 10 minutes or longer even in summer. My business was around high end customers and I didnt like looking like a steam engine so I changed the engine with a newer one which has 300 hours on it. The machine shows 800? (I cant remember for sure but will check) The jack shaft has been updated to the newer style . It has greenteeth on it. It has remote and wired remote. I added a hydraulic cooler with fan like the 7015 has. (I bought this from Carlton) It works great. I also have a new hydraulic pump for it. I also changed the drive motor. It has the extending tongue. Most things have been updated. I wish I could remember the dealer I got it from as he ripped me a new one it but I feel it is as it should be now. Im asking 10k and will probly list it on ebay.
