not going sure where to post this but thought this was a start
small wood lot was logged, all hardwood, thinking of talking to the owner about the tops...
what is the going rate to pay for tops? location CT, thinking of firewood sales on the side

you and the owner would have to agree to a per cord or per load price.

Could you possibly offer to hand pile every thing which will not make firewood and get the firewood in exchange?

some nearby stumpage prices

New York

MA CT RI

stumpage = standing.

tops aren't stumpage. they can be more work to make firewood, imo.

lower price for 12+ cord volume

whatever you do, whatever you do,
write the whole deal down on paper + carbon copy. you sign. landowner sign.

just some thoughts

I'd offer a carton of beer, for as much as you can haul away. Make sure they give you imported beer though, don't settle for local stuff. You're cleaning up stuff that nobody wanted to pay for and wouldn't even take for free. As already mentioned, get it in writing otherwise they might not ever give you the beer you're owed for all that hard work.

Most firewood sellers down here get their wood by the dump truck load for free, dropped off on their proprty. If I were selling firewood, I'd pay as little as possible for raw materials.

If it were me, I'd ask the property owner what they're going to do with the remaining "mess" and go from there. You never know, they may be willing to pay someone (you) to clean it up or pick & choose then pile the rest.

well, no land owner around here is gonna give it to ya. 20+ years ago I paid 5 bucks a full cord to the lo. take that for what its worth, but I would offer them something. remember that many fear liability so that may stop some. be friendly above all.

years ago we had a deal were we got the log clean up, the thining and falling of the stuff the trees that got left andor broken. we got a 6 acre landing and had to pile the slash and burn it in the winter. no stumpage but that was in the way back machine

Yeah, just ask for it, if the lo says he wants to make a deal on it offer to help burn the brush in the winter. Try to not pay for it, possibly include him on on profits if he can sell a couple loads of the finished product for you or get you a few phone calls for delivery's or something. Its still fun, but pretty hard to cut from the tops. Helps if you can drive to them.
