That can be a kinda tricky question. i you mean working for a private land owner as in you are brokering all your own wood as in you the logger you can make some very good money but that all depends on markets. if your working for a mill as a sub contractor you make the most money by havin high production. personally i like working as a sub contractor for a mill. for the most part you will always have featrue work and your pay is not as dependent on markets (paid per thousand). our equipment is also more geared towards production.

I'd say it's based on the market... Right now, our mills aren't taking any wood... None.

I called the FS about some fuel reduction they have listed for this summer. I've worn many hats, as far as work. The last 6 years I've worked in construction, either welding, or as a carpenter... Construction is in the toilet.

I wanted to know about these FS jobs... They're bid by the million.

So I ask this FS guy about the mills. I say, "If the mills won't take wood, and a guy gets the bid... He'd be sitting on 200 trucks full of firewood?" He answered "Yup". I reckon a guy could try and train car the stuff to the coast, and try and sell it? But that would most likely be akin to peeing up a rope.

I hope y'all are fairing better economically around the country!

yea it sounds like your more geared towards poduction. i do about 8 loads a week of saw logs for a mid-sized mill here in sothern NY. we dont do pulp cause truckin is just too much. our markes are shot to hell. the mill is shut down right now till mid jan. but we are still cutting and proably will keep goin nomatter what happens. that wat i like about workin for a mill. you kinda have a security or buffer againt the markets.

if you can find 150+ acres privately owned i think that is better than workin with the mill. really depends on the timber...
We are cutting for Shenandoah hardwood in buenavista right now and hauling wood to westvaco in covington. The land is the governments.

I have never herd "wood lot" used like that.

Are they selling timber sales, using a 2400-6 contract? Or is it Stewardship and a service contract?

With timber sales, you should sit down and look at the contract. Right now, everybody is getting Market Related Contract Term Adjustment. That means the market is so crappy that stumpage rates are getting changed as well as extensions given. Of course, you are still taking a gamble and will have to log it eventually. But around here, the change in the stumpage rate is allowing some guys to start logging where they couldn't afford to before. OK, back to the topic...sorry.

one of my friends worked for westvaco... but i thought they are known as meadwestvaco now

Id say right know you would be better off cutting for a mill. During good times your better off bying timber yourself from private land owners.
