My SP-81. Has an SP-80 type non-CB clutch cover.

My SP-81 longevity insurance policy. 'Tis an NOS McCulloch SP-81/PM850 cylinder/piston/rings/oil tank/oil pump/etc "kit" (complete with literature that states it's for a PM850 or SP-81). Traded a 'modern' saw for these parts, plus a couple bars. Going to throw a new intake boot, impulse line, and some AV buffers into the box and keep it safe and sound for the future.

Not quite stock but I prefer the short clutch cover.

Yep that's a PM850 with an SP-81 AF cover. It does look better with the shorter SP-81/SP70 clutch cover swapped on. Good job.

I just saw a fairly nice one sell for $455 + $50 shipping on Ebay. Wow I can get a good used 066 for not much more. That's a bit too rich for me since yu can find the 125" for about that. I've never run one but those 850's must really be special.

Talk about torque!

I just repaired the oiler on this saw as the gasket was a little bit leaky and when the manual oiler was pressed a little bit of bar oil would get shot into the crankcase.

Took it out today for a spin, I never got into this saw that much before, I always new it was a good saw but now I am convinced!

It's basically one of the last of the modern McCullochs. And it's one of the most powerful and usable of the lot. They basically came along when folks started switching to the Husky's and the Stihls, so some can be found with little use on them. Add in their relative lightweights per displacement, that they are familiar to operate for a modern saw user, familiar to repair and upkeep, and the fact they look and sound and feel great, and it all makes sense. A 125 is really more of a collectable saw in my opinion, whereas an 800 or 850 is a collectable user. I would have no problems working in the forest with an 800(it doesn't feel much different from my old 385xp). But I would never sign up to use a 125 unless I had to bring down 8' firs. Those days are gone.

Having said that, $455 is a lot for an 850, that thing musta been pretty minty. I've seen minty Double Eagles go for less than that. I paid closer to $45 than $455 for my PM800.

I put my SP81 to work this weekend, it is as fast if not faster than my 441. The SP81 is wearing full comp on a 24" bar and the 441 is wearing skip on a 25" bar. I will have to say that the SP81 feels just a tad heavier than the 441 but it is a full wrap and all metal.
