I was informed today that i cant be climbing because i am not certified. I have been climbing for 3 years.......(and i know what i am doing) how would you approach a situation like that. I love to climb and i am not picking up limbs all day. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

You've been climbing for 3 years and NOW your boss says you can't climb because you're not certified??? :dizzy:

Maybe its time to move on.

;) get certified

Follow the proper channels and get certified. Is it state, local or ISA they are asking for? What you have learned in 3 years is about what they will test you on. If you can climb, you can do it. DON'T BE SKEEERD

Certified? By who?, please not the I.S.A.. They certify anyone, some excellent, some good and some morons who are not worthy or capable of packing my gas and oil, never mind cutting down trees. I am a certified utility arborist, I am allowed to work around powerlines. Lots of res. climbers are better than me, but they are forbidden from working around power. This cetification is needed cause it easy to get killed around power, but you can't get electrocuted on a res. job. Ask these mutts if you are certified to drag brush, this sounds retarded, if the b.s. doesn't stop, move along.

Yea mate, get the quals, get the boss to pay. He should pay your wages while your studying too. After you have been qualified for a bit then ask for a raise.

If you look at it from his point of view, if you fall, hes gona get in the s**t.

DONT leave with no qualifications! You go to apply for a job with no paper saying you are what you are, but a little experience...

That is if your boss even gives you a reference.

I'm a cynical bugger sometimes but there's always a motive.

If you are not climbing who is? And are you sure it's not a cold shoulder you're getting?

There's 3 options ...

1/ Can you change it? if not

2/ Can you live with it? if not

3/ Leave.

It's in your hands now.

great minds think alike this was the first thing that came to my mind

certified? who me.

over here we are required to be ticketed up.... only problem is i only have my basic chainsaw and basic climbing tickets.....done some largish removals and trims..... boss keeps sayin he will get them sorted. i should be ticketed its just a bit of paper however, a bit of paper that keeps the boss in the clear should you cock up

And more money.

Why should an employer be expected or required to pay? Do they pay for you to take your driver's license?

It does seem odd the change things after some time. We still don't know what type of cert. the employer is requiring.

Tom, we do. Qualified help is so hard to come by down here, if we see potential in a current employee we invest in them. Pay for the whole kit and kabudal. CDL, certification, CEU's, books you name it. We consider it an investment in the company. So far the investment has come back 10 fold. Needless to say the employee must be top notch to even get consideration.

That's much different than expecting or demanding that the employer provide compensation. Rewarding potential achievers is the best way to keep people around. I've done the same and rarely been stung.

A CDL is different than a basic DL though. I was trying to make a metaphor on the fly. :)
