A couple of other techniques to try.
Just have her NOT use the cat damper at all with small fires. The cat is there for efficient, clean burns. But if she's getting enough heat from the stove, skip the cat and order her ( sure! ) to not fill the firebox.
I know a few cat stove owners here who never have used the cat option ( as much as I try to talk them into its advantages ). They burn the cat stove the way they used to with pre EPA stoves.
Good luck.

Good info!

Mine is not a cat stove, but I wanted to experiment with the "cat" thing anyway since I've read so much about them here. I found that it really smokes, creates a lot of noise, and the odor really reeks.
I'm getting scratched up quite a bit too.

Will it help if I put a couple near the stove to dry out a little, like this?

I was raised in a wood heated home so naturally wanted one ever since. I have been researching what type of wood stove to buy the last two years and have found many of the stoves made today leave a lot to be desired. The manufactures of many of these well know brands lie, cheat, and steal to get you to buy them, then you find you have been swindled out of your hard earned money or worse! I found Blaze King stoves to be honest and clearly the only choice IMHO. Check out the way they build them and why some of the problems you are having with your new stove are from just bad design. Looks good though and congrats just be very careful with them pesky embers trying to fly out! Good luck

I just throw mine in 'green' .......... no drying out. Fortunately for me, we have a near unlimited free supply down around the dumpster at the Chinese food restaraunt down the road. I will say that the cooks down there don't like me........ like I'm taking food out of their mouths or sumthin......

I was at first also worried about the pad under the new stove and how it looked too small. Look again carefully, under the white mat the floor protection appears to continue to the required 16". True, it is defeated by the white mat but the install is legit. You need 16" in front of any stove door in the US. Canooks go to 18" I believe.

The VC brand is now known as a lemon. Old VCs were great but those designs and that company no longer exist. The best Cat stoves, as Excaliber points out, are now Blaze Kings if you can stand the looks. Next best is Woodstock but their lineup is full of small sized stoves.

Well... My stove may be a bad design and a POS, But i am stuck with it now. So i have to make the best out of it. Spent too much money and like to have never got it in the house. It's not been a bad stove so far, It just doesn't do what i thought cat stoves were supposed to do.

We have a Vermont Casting w/cat and use a magnetic chimney thermometer 12" above the stove per instructions. It is extremely helpful with a catalytic stove. If you smell the stove you may be over heating it.
We have one of those on the door, Kinda gives a good indication when you can close the dampner. The stove has one on top in the cat. It tells you the temp of the cat. You are right about smelling it, It is too hot. I painted my pipes last summer and they stink bad when it overheats. We try not to do that much.

Well, one other advantage for the new stove. You can see the fire. That to me is important, if for no other reason than helping to know when to add more fuelwood.

Now that I study yours, cooking with a grill like mine may not work, I see no small hearth underneath the outer doors for the back legs of the grill to rest on.

Ours would probably fill the house with smoke leaving the doors open.

Mine doesn't have the cat but is an epa setup, with the top foam stuff pushed to the back and the smoke goes up the front of the stove, I've reloaded before without opening the air intake. I was very surprised I didn't have smoke issues.

Nope, It don't have the ledge to rest the grill on. Guess we will just have to stick with the outside grill.lol

It would probably work if i didn't use too much wood and let it get hot before opening the door. I can load wood without smoke coming out most of the time.
