Anyone got a good tip on how to stop the base of my handle getting damaged around the maul head.
It came with a rubber protector which didn't last long, tried gaffer taping it, then cable tying it..... neither lasted long.

I had poor results with my first one, second one is still good after the new handle I put it on finally broke from all the years sitting ouit in the weather. The rubber donut is on the shelf "in case". I used to replace handles about every 3 years, that one lasted a lot longer but I decided I had enough 'handle fitting' and bought a maul with the plastic handle.

I bought a Ochsenkopf maul at a yardsale this summer , it was chewed up a bit so I folded over a piece of sheetmetal , welded and then pinned it .

one thing my dad taught was to split from the outside, meaning not to split with a split side facing you as some splinters can break off and hit the handle, if this makes sense.

I absolutely agree 110%.

I split near then far and thaaaaaat's the main reason why Ben doesn't have any nice wood handled splitting tools. Plus using the handle as a pry bar but that is another discussion.

Could try wrapping it up with wire. 3-4" or so of width. Seen lots of those over the years.

Still wouldn't be as rugged as Dancans mod looks though.

Two thumbs up for the thread title.

Good tips guys, I do my best to go easy on the device but over the years your bound to have some missed hits or sometimes it just slices straight through and hits some splinters.
I'll try the wire first, see how it goes, if that fails I'll go with Dancas sheet metal trick, that should do the job.

Cheers guys
