What's your favorite pruning handsaw? I was always under the impression that straight blade saws are better for fine pruning.I'm thinking of trying out the Silky Gomtaro. Any feedback?

Silky for sure they are $$ but worth it, I use a zubat and love it, plus the blades are interchangeble fo my pole saw. Just bought a larger one cant recall the name but it in the yellow scabbard, it is one fine saw. Straight blade will get into tighter places.

Ha Ha I can't believe it someone actually had the chance to throw in the zubat before me. We have a on going joke between the guys about the zubat 330 twin turbo something or other. Who needs a 200t when you have a zubat. Oh if I had the zubat I could prune this tree in half the time ect... All joking aside they seem to be pretty good and I would recommend them.

Can't go no better than Silkey.

I use a Sugoi. I've had mine for 5 years. Still plenty sharp. Was wicked sharp when I first got it. Will cut the crap out of you if you are not careful.

They sure can , just barely touched myself with one the other day and blead like a stock hog, it wasnt even a deep cut.

when it comes to the smaller stuff id say the zubat could hold its own against a 200 or 201, sharp little thing, keep it away from your climbing line lol.

The Zubat

So are you guys using this Zubat for fine pruning? It just seems so beefy to me compared to a straight blade saw.Seems more like its for destruction!

For real fine pruning you may want Bonsai shears/scissors. :hmm3grin2orange:

I love the Zubat.........

but then again, I prune to the stump.:msp_rolleyes:

My thoughts exactly. My Sugoi makes nice pruning cuts as does my pole saw... If I need to make fine cuts on ornamentals or something like that I am using hand pruners or a pole pruner.

How abot having the pole hanging below you while the saw head is in the scabbard, on your saddle. Handsaw then when you need it snap it on the pole. My ARS polesaw just got rebuilt its 5-6 years old. I prefer the zubat but now i make my own. For hand saws a staight blade is a must for backing you up in removals. Straight hinge and curve blade don't match. Those jap crap hand saws are way over priced. I . run a 201 t. No I use american Fanno. Made in chico california.

I've used a lot of different brand of hand saws, but my all time Favorite is the silky sugoi. I touch my up every week or so with a special Japanese file I get on ebay. I started up a small fir one day and was waiting for a saw when I first got a Sugoi, I had that thing limbed and a top out before the chainsaw got there with that hand saw. The start of a great relationship.
Its always on my belt if I'm off the ground. Granted the sugoi is maybe a little to much saw on small trimming cuts.
I use a curved 15in. corona blade I buy at lowes for 20.00 for my pole saw. I change it every two weeks or so. Silkys are expensive, but will last for a long time. Sugoi 402 replacement blade is 60.00. I am kind of cheap, but I won't settle for a lesser saw on my belt.(sounds like a commercial)
I don't think I have ever used a straight blade on a hand saw. I recently micky moused a old Sugoi blade to my cheap telescoping polesaw and its a real performer now.
I used a folding corona hand saw for a long time and like them a lot too. I still have a bunch of them that lost the bolt that holds the blade on laying around.

Zubat and Fanno, I have both, like them both. Would say the Zubat is better. I have a cheapy from Lowes as well, not sure the brand, not Corona, but its a straight blade and it works real good on the small stuff. I bought those 16" Sherrill blades for my poles, they suck, to aggressive and the tooth count is small, they act like a sharp chain with the depth gauge too short.

I am sure that fanno is a good saw but never used one. I went straight from an old 6 point hand saw, the big clunky old school kind into a smaller straight blade model that said sthil on it(not sure who really made it). That was an amazing difference right there. Then I got a silky zubat. That was a game changer. That saw is pure excellence in my opinion. If its to small for a zubat than its prolly time for hand pruners. You guys using a sugio, you ever have an issue with that big "hook" at the bottom of the handle, the pummel I guess, getting snagged on limbs? I remember a guy using a corona with a black scabbard (not really made for it) and it had that hook on the handle and it would actually get pulled out and fall sometimes. Otherwise it looks like a great saw for a wide rage of limbs. I also have my eye on this one. Anyone using it?Tree Stuff - Silky Sugowaza 420 Lineman's Hand Saw

I use a Gomtaro. I love that little saw! It took a while to get used to taking the pressure off the blade on the push stroke (seems to bend easier than the bigger saws), but like anything, it comes. Much nicer having something smaller on my saddle too. Not to mention the quality of the cuts.. especially on smaller stuff.

I hated the Sugoi.

Never had a problem with the pummel catching on anything myself. Really, on most smaller stuff it only takes one pull of the blade to cut through it. Medium stuff, maybe two or three pulls. I will occasionally use it on 4-6" limbs if I don't feel like pulling the 200 up in the tree.

The Sugoi is a little long. It can be a little cumbersome while climbing if you try wearing it strapped to your leg. Not too bad when you hang it on your saddle. It is nice to use when you need to reach out and catch a bull line and pull it too you or something like that. If I had it to do over I would probably go with the shorter Zubat though.

Not to slam Sherrill, but I recently bought their 16" blade for my polesaw too. It does suck. Their new to the saw market and should rethink it. I was very disappointed.
