I have a 4" x 20' oak limb to prune. It will be cut at the collar and I don't want to damage or shock the tree. I would like to know when a good time of year to do it would be?
Thanks All,
new guy

Are you cutting it yourself? If so do some research, you want to cut it before the branch collar. The when question can be answered by asking why. If its hazardous then remove it now. if its for other reasons where there is no risk of property damage or injury then you the experts say during the dormant seasons between the leaves dropping and forming. Oak wilt being another consideration and if there is a concern you may want to do some research on how to address those concerns.

Tree Pig,
Thank you. Yes I am pruning myself. The branch is not a hazard yet. However the bark is peeling underneath and looks to be the start of rot or some type of fungus. I plan to cut 1/4 of the way outside the collar first then go just outside it. You guys on here are the majority of my research.:cool2: Kidding aside, I have done a lot of research, definitely know my limits, and if there is any doubts I call a pro.

Wait until winter, you are trying to avoid bugs. Lots of peeps give dates like after Nov 1st and say after the first frost, not true. If there are flys still around, there are other flying bugs. Once the frost is in the ground, bugs are locked in and any that didnt make it, that are still out and about will die. This is, by no means a guarantee, but it does give your oak the best odds.
