Just ordered a Dolmar 5100, which I need like a hole in the head, but just couldn't resist. I have a couple of questions though.
1. It appears that some of the older advertised HP ratings are 4 BHP and newer ads state 3.8 BHP. is this just different publishers, rounding, different markets locations, or has the 5100 been EPA tweeked?

2. The answer to question 1 may have some bearing on this one. I searched and found some info on 5100 muffler mods, but not really much that tells me how well it responds to muffler mods. Has anyone done any before/after timing or some other objective measure of gains after modding? I don't really want to mod the muffler unless I can reasonably expect a significant gain.

Imo, the 4.0 bhp was allways in doubt, as the 2.9 kW had to be rounded down from 2. 948 or so, and the 4.0 bhp up from 3.951 or so, if it should add up. Originally they said 4.0 hp (not bhp), and that was easier to believe.

That aside, I have noted that the kW rating also were revised recently, from 2.9 to 2.8 kW, so your question is valid anyway.........;)

I called Dolmar about this after buying my saw.

I called Dolmar about it, (yeah, I'm a nerd)
The label on my saw stated one HP rating(lower), the catalog listed a slightly higher HP
I was told that the saw was originally designed with a different piston/ different stroke. At some point in the production of the 5100's, the piston was changed slightly(same bore) and the stroke lengthened (or shorter, I forget). I'll leave it too you so speculate why the change was made(Anyone know?).
But the lower HP, as shown on the label is the correct one.
This bit of information does devalue any 5100's out there, so if you have one in great shape, I'll give you $200 for it.

Later,
Mitch

I have for a long time wondered why the 5100 had a higher power rating than the Euro PS5000, as they ended up with the same P&Cs, after some initial differences. There were no other differences that explained the difference either, that I could find.........;)
