Yeah, they split easier than some of the knotty second growth stuff I've got now. You just work on one round a while and get a lot of pieces. There were a lot of tired guys wandering around with a limp earlier this Spring. We opened up some big blowdown to firewood cutting. They also climbed and hung blocks to get the rounds down to their pickups. I think some were reliving their rigging days.

I wish we could do that here. Stupid Olympic National Forest rules say you can only cut a windfall if it is in the clearing width of the road right of way. They have some fancy name for it but I forget. We used to just cut up the old fir windfalls we found close to the road but that is now a hanging offense.:chainsaw:

Same thing down here with redwood. You can't even take the cut out piece home to make fence posts.

It isn't common to do it here. Those blowdowns happened to be in the right management area and it was surveyed for all the critters because an attempt was made to sell it for timber. But it couldn't be put in a timber sale, so was let out to firewooders. It had been sitting since 2006.

Cedar takes a special permit.
