Just got my alaskan mill up and running again and could use some help catching up on technique and to see if I screwed up already.

I started with a 12 ft. doug fir log, 15" at the small end and cut 2 6x6 posts from it as well as some other random lumber.
The 6x6's were taken from a 6" slab with the heart in the center. I then squared both sides leaving a 12x6 then split the wood right down the middle.
Now after the fact, I realized that I probably should have boxed the heart for one post and taken the other from a quarter.
Anyone have any opinion if the posts will cup badly as they have heartwood running along one side?

You might get away with it, might even have some real nice stable posts. Some warp, some don't, depends on the tree.

Doug fir should be fine for not warping much. I have also done Ponderosa Pine and it hasn't done much warping either.

Here is how I set up my mini-mill to mill 2x4's, 4x4's and 6x6 beams. If you plan to be making lots of posts or beams, think about getting a mini-mill.

Thanks all for the info and opinions. We'll just have to see how they hold up.
