Question about my mabple tree.

I have this maple tree in front of my house. It looks like one of the previous owners cut some branches off or they broke off. One of the old crotches holds water and is causing decay. Is there anything I can do or should to do correct this? Also, it looks like there is a split running up the trunk. I was just curious if I should be concerned about it. Here are some pictures.
