I went to Sears Parts/Service yesturday to pickup a part for my lawn tractor.I was looking at their rack of Used and Reconditioned Chinsaws they had some saws in sad shape.

I picked up 2 saws that were display saws for $50.00 for the pair. Craftsman 16 in. Gas Chainsaw 36cc Engine.
They have never been started didn't come with any manuals or tools. But i found out that a husky wrench works on them.
here are some copies of similar saws

Who makes them i was told they were Poulan ?

Did I pay too Much ?

I hate to say it, but getting two new saws for less than the price of a pro chainsaw bar is a pretty good deal. Yeah, you did ok. :))

Update on the saws

After useing the pair of chainsaws today to do some firewood cutting and some testing out i found out a few things.

The first saw pictured is the the worst saw ive ever used its under powered and leaves little to be desired its a good saw for a home owner that wants to use once or twice and let sit on a shelf.

The second saw i like better it seems to have a little more power then the first i used it the most out of the 2 saws

Just wanted to let people know what i thought

Thanks
Dan

I never thought I would see the day I would own a Craftsman chain saw, but I do . anyone happen to know who made this critter for Sears. I have searched Mr. Acres site. I can't find this particular saw, the closest I can get is it was made by Poulan, but not sure which model. The saw is a moldy oldy for sure, I got my fingers crossed that it just needs some carb work. I am not going to spend much time or money on this one that is for sure.

I've never had any 36cc Poulans, just 42cc's. On the 42cc models, it's imperative that the limiter caps on the carb get pulled and the saw retuned. They come extremely lean from the factory and will burn up in short order, besides being a pita to start. Give that a try(if you haven't already) and maybe you'll see a bit more power.

It resembles the homelite xl series an awful lot.

Thanks guys, Looks like your hitting the nail right on the head on this one. Gives me a different direction to look into.

Reminds of that Dolly Parton song, coat (saw) of many colors. gl

Looks like an early Echo to me...

For the money you did fine...

I still have a Craftsman 3.4 that I bought new in 1982, and it runs fine :) - It is not a pro Husky or Stihl, but it cost quite a bit less at the time.

I'm pretty sure thats a Roper. They made a 3.7 that came with a 17" bar. I worked on one the other day and that looks very similar. Rotary carries some parts for it. The one I worked on was a pretty good little saw. I would take it over what their selling today easy.

Looks like I got a real conversation piece going here with this Craftsman, now I don't feel so bad about getting it. Intially the guy I bought it from had two saws, a cheery 041 FB, plus the Sears I wanted that 041 bad, he changed his mind on the Sthil after I showed up, he knew I was in the tree biz, said his son wanted it

Squid did a little better than I did on this one, even though the saw doesns't right now, it does have a good feel to it, the orginal owner said it was a powerful saw for it's size, we will see, hopefully.

Didn't Roper also make a line of small garden type tractors and mowers for Sears??? The time frame would be right if this saw is as old as I think it is, it would make sense it would be a Roper. My Craftsman is identical to the links that have been posted, thanks again for the info.
