I would like some info on the size of the root ball on a silver maple. Do they have a center tap root or a shallow root system? I took a large one down and need to remove the stump. The trunk at ground level measures 6foot 8inches across. There are alot of surface roots also. Thanks for your help... bob

In my experience, maples are generally shallow rooted. I ground one stump out once that was about the size you describe with a rayco self propelled grinder. I don't remember the number of the machine, but it's the one that has the dual wheels and the dozer blade on the front. You shouldn't have to go too deep with the grinder to take care of the stump, maybe 1 foot.
