Well, ...If you want to get huffy about it...! :blob2:

I`m not all huffy about it, I just call bs when I see it. I can back up my opinions and I`m simply offering a counterpoint.

I suppose now I will have some guys telling me that I can`t run a 72x73LG chain to the nubbins with virtually no stretch because they can`t. When I first started out I would run chains so dull that it wasn`t uncommon to remove a link and put the chain back in service, brand didn`t matter. Then I learned how to sharpen and maintain chains and not cut dirt.

The hype regarding sharpening before or after assembly is blown way out of proportion. Where cutting edges get dulled at the factory is when the chain is spooled. Now I suppose that Carlton is sharpened after it`s spooled? LOL! All chain that I have seen benefits from a quick filing before use.

I always ran oregon.......my boss started buying laser chain and some old stock windsor, we really didn't care for the laser chain the windsor was ok. i read about everyone on here raving about carlton so i picked up a roll. to say it does not stretch like oregon is a total crock of squid spunk. i put a 93dl chain on a 395 this morning, i started the saw and reved it a bit setting the carb since its a new saw. chain stretched so i tightened the chain. ran a tank through it cutting wood. i had to tighten the chain again when i refueled. she should be good now for a little bit. i feel ALL chains stretch with use. on my ms200 when ever i put a new chain on it i start it rev it then retighten the chain. they always stretch when new. when i'm done with the roll of carlton i'm not sure yet if i'll go back to oregon or stick with carlton a bit.

What do you think of Carlton chain, Russ?

I think it`s pretty good, nothing sensational though. All chain stretches and all chain gets dull.

What do you think of Carlton chain Rex?

BTW, did you see my mention of you in Ed`s forum the other day? I gave everyone the heads up that you must be pretty famous to be in a Primus song. :D

I've never used it.

No, I didn't see that one. Been busy studying for a big mid-term Monday, plus I'm working all weekend. :)

Here ya go Rex, straight from Wynona`s Big Brown Beaver!

"Now rex he was a texan out of new orleans
And he travelled with the carnival shows.
He ran bumper cars, sucked cheap cigars
And he candied up his nose.
He got wind of the big brown beaver
So he though he’d take himself a peek,
But the beaver was quick
And grabbed him by the kiwis.
Now he ain’t pissed for a week.
(and a half!)"

Like I said in the Other thread, not exactly Robert Service, but still an entertaining read. :D

BTW, good luck on the exam!

My experiecne is liek a lot of others....when I didn't know better I had a lot more problems having chains sag..with proper filing break in and tensioning it has ceased to be an issue. All the Oregon I have bought was sharp enough to cut well right out of the box. I like Oregon, Carlton, Stihl, WP everything I've run so far seems to be a decent product. Baileys just sells the Wp so dirt cheap in the pre cut loops it's hard to pass up. Reels of Oregon are cheap too.

I have always had Oregon chains (6) total. Both Husqvarnas came with em. These are .50 3/8" 72 count. I always thought the Oregon chain was sharp from the factory. I have had a local yahoo Re-sharpen my old chains with not as good as factory new results. Then I find out a friend sharpens his own chains with a bench mounted chain sharpener. So I gave him my dull chains and had him sharpen them. Yesterday I finaly got a chance to use one of those newly sharpend chains. HOLY CRAP! Could that chain cut! I mean I never knew how dull from the factory the Oregons were. The newly sharpend chain is still sharp after cutting a cord of (Mixed 70% Pine) Pine, Cedar and Mahogany. The Oregon chains absolutley hate the Mohogany (Factory edge) and get dull at about 1/3 cord. (No I dont cut directly on the ground) This newly sharpend chain I would say is now as sharp as the factory Oregon chain was out of the box but after cutting a cord of mixed wood. That is pretty dam good in my book. I have ordered a Woodsman Pro chain from baileys which says its on Oregon chain. So its probrably Oregon chain sharpend. I will let you know after I get it. I will compare it to Oregon new out of the box and against one of my newly sharpend chains. I will also be ordering a 100' of the Carlton chain. I will have my friend size it up for me. I'll let you know how that cuts as well. My 2 cents worth.

just for the record....i've been through thousands of feet of chain and i've never felt the need to sharpen or touch up a new chain.

I looked at Home Depot's chain the other day and noticed that their "Power Care" labeled chain carried the Carlton name.

I agree with Kenny on this one. I haven't gone through any where near the amount of chain that he has.

The only exception was on my 346. EHP told me that 3/8 may be a little grabby until the 1st or 2nd sharpening. I filed the chain a little just to eliminate this. This was the only time.

Interesting, Oregon sells more chain and bars than anyone else in the world by a long shot, yet the consensus in this thread, and on this site, seems to be that most Oregon products are junk.

Looks like pack mentality, which isn`t exactly objective.

Russ

Tell me, exactly what does sales have to do with quality??? In this case, nothing.

"Weekend warriors" buy way more chain than pro's, not even close. Oregon chain fits into their budget. Same with the bars. So that is what is sold the most. Low cost and readily avalible for any saw in any store. It's alway's been that way. Even before the big chain store, the little stores all sold Oregon becouse of the price and selection. Not becouse they were "the best". While I don't really see too much difference between standard Stihl bars and Oregon when comparing use per dollar, there is no comparison between Stihl and Oregon chain. Stihl chain is so superior, it's amazing. I spent almost as much time stopping and adjusting Oregon chains as I did sharpening them. The edge of a Stihl chain lasts much longer too, with more sharpenings per chain. I can only recall a hand full of times where the Stihl chains needed adjustment. For the extra 6 or so dollars per chain, you get more than your money's worth.
