When doing a removal (w/o a bucket truck) do most of you guys set a climbing line (life line) with a throw bag or do you gaff up and set it? If you do gaff up and set it, do you remove limbs as you are going up?

Jeff

I prefer to set as many lines as possible before entering the tree. Like that, I can start getting limbs out on my way up, as opposed to having to go up, set the lines, then come back down to get the limbs, only to have to go back up again. However, there are certain times when that just isn't worth the trouble, and I just tie in once I get all the way up there.

In this biz, safety is the name of the game. I agree with treeman82, more than one life line the better. Remember...GRAVITY RULES !!! For removals, I'll have a climbing line in the tree but assend using spikes and flip line adjusting the climbing line as I go. I'm not fast but I do try to be safe. ;)

So it boils down to the easiest method for me.
Me too, which often is: lean up the trusty 32' ladder, climb to the top, lanyard in, toss monkey fist, tie bowline, descend, move ladder, fell tree.

Old-fashioned, but fast, easy, safe and effective.;)

Gaff, shmaff, too much work. Sometimes a BS is best.

But after reading murph's article, maybe I'll learn enough new notch tricks so a rope will be just a backup.
