race chain honing stones

This question was part of another thread but got lost in the "mix" : what type of stones are people using for honing cutters and where can they be purchased?

Diamond hones. You can buy them all over unless you want the special ones for honing chain, noone will know what you are talking about.

Well, sorta.

Remember the old barber-shop, where the barber used to fresh-up his razor with a "Strop"?

Most of them strops had rouge (a polishing compound) impregnated into the leather, but they were mostly for trueing up the fine edge on the razor.

I got me a razor hone and strop, used to belong to my granddad, have played around with them a little. You can shave with them old straight razors if you want to, but I'd sooner use a chainsaw. Maybe that's why I've had whiskers all over my own ugly mug for 25 years....

Harbor Freight Tools has a whole page of diamond sharpening tools and bits. I was wondering if any of them would be suitable for hand use or in a Dremel type grinder for touching up saw chain, but I never got past the wondering stage.

I've got a buddy who's a machinist and he gave me some stones once that were about 1/2"&times;1/16"&times;6" and 1/4"&times;1/8"&times;6".&nbsp; Very easy to snap off a little piece and get into nooks with.&nbsp; Maybe a place like <a href="http://www.tennesseeabrasive.com/">Tennessee Abrasives</a> can help you find something.&nbsp; They mention dressing stones, and dental stones, among others.
